Nellie Bly (1864-1922) was an investigative reporter, world traveler, business owner, patent holder, suffragist, war correspondent, and advocate for abandoned children and single mothers. A woman ahead of her times!

Many of us have not had the opportunity to update our wardrobes or spend a fun night gathering with friends in quite a while. Let’s change that and help other women at the same time! Grab a glass of wine and join us for a virtual fashion show and personalized shopping experience on the first Thursday in March as we gather online for a fundraiser to support our Back-to-the-Books scholarship.
We will be hosting a virtual fashion show where you will see the new spring line from cabi, a line of women’s clothing and accessories that fit and flatter women for any occasion, and you will have the opportunity to purchase any pieces that you like. A portion of the proceeds will be donated back to AAUW for our Back to Book Scholarship fund and you will also be supporting a local woman owned business in our consultant, Susan Luka.
It is simple! RSVP by clicking the button below and then keep your eye out for an email from Susan with a link to the Front Row viewing of cabi’s newest Spring Collection. All you will need to do is log on at 7:00, Thursday March 4 and sit back and enjoy!
The show is interactive, allowing you to see and speak to each other while enjoying the models as they mix and match pieces. You can select items to add to your favorites list and if you wish to purchase anything, you can do this here too, or in the days immediately following the show. Our consultant, Susan will be available for personalized style advice and sizing suggestions.
We will also be raffling off a half-priced item, donated by our cabi consultant, so get ready to freshen up your wardrobe and treat yourself to a fun and entertaining evening!

by Leslie Goddard, well-known local historian and portrayal artist.
Imagine having a conversation with a celebrated First Lady! Eleanor Roosevelt grew from a shy, homely orphan into a confident, driven champion of human rights. In this program, Eleanor grapples with whether or not to join the United Nations. As she considers her options, she shares stories of her childhood, her marriage , her work during two wars, her husband's bout with polio, coming to the White House in 1933, and Franklin's death. As she speaks, she reveals the warm, honest, and passionate woman she was.

Greetings to All,
Just over a year ago we were informed that the first case of the coronavirus had been discovered in the U.S. but we didn’t yet know what we were in for! Since then, we have become accustomed to staying home, wearing masks, washing our hands, and trying to stay safe. Who would ever have thought that we could get used to giving up travel, social gatherings with family and friends and our face-to-face AAUW events? But here we are and we have found alternative ways to get along. Most of us have been very lucky so far but now we are waiting for the vaccine which appears to be very close.
In keeping with our new entertainment venue, Zoom, we have three fantastic dramatic programs for February, March and April: “Travels, Triumphs, and Tribulations of Nellie Bly” with Mary Hobein, “Eleanor Roosevelt” with Leslie Goddard, and “Laudable Ladies, Revisited and Revised” with Joyce Tumea and the Pri-Merry Players, of course all on Zoom. We are hoping you will avail yourself of these great events we have provided. If you haven’t become accustomed to Zoom, now is a wonderful time to give it a try and, if you have questions, please give one of us a call.
We have been waiting for quite a while and hoping for the ability to schedule some face-to-face meetings but, of course, we will have to wait a little longer. So we hope you all stay well and we will do our best to keep you connected.

RESTAURANT FUNDRAISERS
Thank you for supporting the City Barbecue Fundraiser on January 20. The branch raised $100.34 while members and friends enjoyed delicious barbecue. So far, the branch has raised over $500 this year.
Our next restaurant fundraiser will be on Wednesday, March 24th at Lou Malnati’s in Downers Grove, Naperville and Bolingbrook. Chose the location that is most convenient for you. Click here for a flyer which includes the hours of operation for each restaurant. Please, please publicize this to your friends and family. By March 24th, we may be able to gather together to enjoy pizza.

AAUW Responds to Capitol Assault |
|
On Wednesday, January 6, our nation watched in horror as our democracy came under attack in an unlawful and violent invasion of the U.S. Capitol. As AAUW’s National office is based in Washington, D.C., the personal safety of our staff and their families was at risk as armed insurgents took to the streets calling for violence toward our elected officials and the overthrow of a free and fair election.
The mob used hateful language and displayed symbols of white supremacy as they forced their way into the hallowed halls of Congress. We mourn the loss of the five individuals killed in the attack, including Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick, and the many others hurt.
As scary and shocking as this was, it was sadly not surprising given the incendiary speech the President gave to the rioters prior to the attack and the divisive tone he has set for years. From calling the racist protestors in Charlottesville “very fine people” to telling the Proud Boys to “stand by” in a presidential debate, President Trump has given us many warning signs.
AAUW is proud to join in solidarity with leading gender justice and equity organizations in a statement demanding that President Trump and his enablers be held accountable for their actions. We hope this unified message will inspire those in power to action. If you feel comfortable contacting your elected officials, we encourage you to do so.
And, as we collectively work to understand the roots of our nation's divisions, we ask you to actively engage in efforts to defeat white supremacy.
As AAUW members, we all embrace our vision of equity for all, and we hold our values close to our hearts and minds. Thank you to everyone who has reached out to ensure your AAUW staff are safe in this uncertain time.
