According to those who responded to the previous Double Helix poll about COVID-19 booster doses: 67% said they had already received or planned to get a COVID-19 booster when eligible. That is a good start but we certainly have more work to do!
Throughout the 2022-2023 respiratory season, the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases (NFID) will share tools and resources designed to educate both the public and healthcare professionals (HCPs) about the importance of preventing influenza (flu), pneumococcal disease, COVID-19, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). I hope that you will join us in sharing these tools widely.

To kick-off flu season, in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), NFID will host the 2022 Annual Influenza/Pneumococcal News Conference. The national media event, scheduled for October 4, 2022, brings together government, non-profit and private sector organizations, and advocacy groups to launch the flu season each year and to convey a strong and unified commitment to disease prevention.

|
This year, the panel of experts will include: Tamika C. Auguste, MD, ACOG Fellow and Chair, Women’s and Infants’ Services, MedStar Washington Hospital Center; NFID Medical Director William Schaffner, MD; Patricia (Patsy) A. Stinchfield, RN, MS, CPNP, NFID President (Moderator); Jeb S. Teichman, MD, Pediatrician and Retired Healthcare Executive; and CDC Director Rochelle P. Walensky, MD, MPH.

CDC will present final flu vaccine coverage data from the 2021-2022 US flu season, and panelists will discuss the importance of vaccination against flu and pneumococcal disease, particularly among older adults, pregnant women, and those with chronic health conditions who are at higher risk for serious related complications. Results from a new NFID national survey of US adults will also be shared on vaccination attitudes and behaviors, including the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. Register to view the news conference online at www.nfid.org/2022flunews.

If you have not already done so, we invite your organization to join the NFID Leading By Example initiative to make a public commitment to annual flu vaccination and share flu vaccination photo(s) on social media using the hashtag #FightFlu. Download a #FightFlu paddle for the photo and be sure to tag @NFIDvaccines in your posts.

Like flu and pneumococcal disease, RSV impacts individuals across the lifespan, from infants to older adults. While RSV may look and feel like a common cold, it can lead to severe illness, hospitalization, and death. If you or someone you know has been impacted by RSV, please share your RSV story to help NFID raise awareness about the true burden of the disease.

Lastly, I am thrilled to announce the launch a new NFID podcast series, Infectious IDeas, where leading experts join us for thought-provoking conversations. Guests will include humble heroes and future leaders working together towards a shared vision of healthier lives for all through effective prevention and treatment. Be sure to listen and subscribe.
