Celebrate Faith and Blue

On Friday, October 7, 2022, The Peachtree City Police Department is hosting the 2nd Annual Faith and Blue event at Drake Field behind City Hall (155 Willowbend Rd, Peachtree City). The event will be from 5 – 7 pm.

This will be a great opportunity to meet our police dogs. There will be a K-9 demonstration by K-9 Midas and K-9 Ejmyr at 5:30 pm and 6:30 pm. Auxiliary therapy dog Tilly will also be present to get her head scratched by as many of you as possible.

Officers will have candy present for trunk-or-treat. Kid’s costumes aren’t required but are absolutely welcome! We hope to see you there.

PTC Running Club donates 8th Water Fountain

A donation by one of metro Atlanta's largest running clubs will help joggers and bicyclists stay hydrated on Peachtree City's multi-use paths.

The Peachtree City Running Club gave the community a new, freeze-resistant water fountain. It was installed at Luther Glass Park.

George Martin, the club's past president, says they've donated eight fountains over the past 40 years.

"They're our way of saying 'Thank you,'" he said.

New Peachtree City Running Club president Shelly Collins agreed, adding that she thinks it important for the community to support all types of active people, whether they're runners or walkers.

"By donating the water fountains and giving back to our amazing city, we can ensure that there are no excuses holding anyone back," Collins said. "The more working fountains along our paths, the better."

Grant Funds Police Department Jiu-Jitsu Classes

Peachtree City police joined more than 70 officers from across the country to get more training on alternative ways to apprehend suspects safely.

Gracie Survival Tactics (GST) teaches a form of Brazilian jiu-jitsu designed to subdue aggressive people with minimal harm to either the officer or the individual. GST co-hosted the September class with the Henry County Police Department in McDonough.

The Peachtree City Police Department first hosted GST training in February, welcoming law enforcement officials from three federal agencies and 20 other Georgia jurisdictions to the Starr's Mill High School gym.

The two sessions were funded by a $60,000 grant from the state Criminal Justice Coordinating Council.

Peachtree City Police Lieutenant Kenneth Ralls said the department now has eight officers certified to teach GST to other cops.

A note from the Mayor about the library

I am a regular library user myself, as well as a former library volunteer. I consider our Library to be one of the best features of our wonderful city.

When Covid hit, we closed the library for only ten weeks in the spring of 2020. But for many library patrons, including myself, that time felt like an eternity.

When we reopened our doors, there were our regulars, so happy to see us, as our wonderful staff was happy to welcome them back. It was a powerful reminder that public libraries are the heartbeat of a community. They really do transform lives and communities by providing resources for lifelong learning.

Following the reopening, library staff followed CDC protocols, which meant the library’s operating hours remained limited due to the staff’s emphasis on the safe processing of returned materials. (We spent a crazy amount of staff time “staging” and tracking returned materials to reduce Covid risk.)

Finally, in May of this year, with the relaxation of Covid-19 mandates, the Library Services Director presented Council with a plan to gradually expand the library’s hours of operation:

• Immediately extend the closing times on Tuesdays and Thursdays to 8 p.m.

• Consistently open at 10 a.m. Monday through Saturday and lengthen Saturday operating hours to 5 p.m.

Council was excited to support this and we set a target date of September 6 for implementation.

Unfortunately, the library is suffering from the same staffing shortages affecting other businesses across the nation.

We conducted interviews throughout the summer and made several job offers. Three prospective employees turned us down. We did hire two part-time librarians for the new hours, then one got Covid on day two.

We still have two positions posted and we desperately want to hire for them. With any luck, we will fill those positions in October. Fingers crossed.

To be clear, funding for the library has no connection to funding available for other items like recreation, city planning, or public works. Our library staff and operations are fully funded in this year’s budget and for the coming years.

Resident Renewals

The 3-year renewal notices for 2023 - 2025, totaling $45, will be mailed today October 3, 2022, and will be due by December 31, 2022. A $20 late fee will apply to all late renewals.

Non-Resident Annual Renewals

Non-resident renewals for 2023 will be mailed out on December 12, 2022, and are due by January 31, 2023. The new supplemental sticker will be valid until January 31, 2024. Non-residents pay the $15 annual registration PLUS a $235 path user fee. A $20 late fee will apply to all late renewals.

Fire Fighters Hold Annual Pumpkin Sale

Halloween is right around the corner, and we know what that means. It's time to buy pumpkins.

The Peachtree City Fire Department has a bumper crop of the orange fruit on sale. Pumpkin sizes range from petite to jumbo. Proceeds from the annual event help the fire department fund training and purchase equipment for our first responders.

The pumpkin sale is located at station 81, 110 Paschall Road, Peachtree City, Georgia, 30269. It ends October 31.
