Dewey Elementary and PTA Create Video to Celebrate Black History Month!
|
Dewey Elementary parents, along with Ron and Jocelyn Davis (Dewey PTA Co-Vice President) collaborated with Dewey Speech Pathologist, Ms. Takaki, and her students to create a beautiful project as a way to celebrate the culmination of Black History Month! Their video presentation highlights National Youth Poet Laureate Amanda Gorman’s poem “Talking Gets Us There”, a poem centered around acceptance, diversity and inclusion, and the importance of speaking up. The video, which features edits and film graphics provided by Ron and Jocelyn and voiceovers from students in Ms. Takaki’s class, showcases a great example of community collaboration! Thank you to all of the individuals involved for their commitment to this project and bringing it to life!
And if Dewey Elementary couldn’t hit the ball out of the park (or net, in this case) any further, Dewey students received a personalized message from Purdue University basketballer Nojel Eastern for Black History Month! Way to stand out, Dewey Tigers!

Dawes Elementary Celebrates Black History Month in Partnership with Northwestern University’s African Studies Program
|
Dawes Elementary’s African American Achievement Committee, in partnership with Northwestern University’s Library of African Studies, has created an artistic wonderland! The committee collaborated with Florence Mugambi, NU African Studies Librarian, who provided a voiceover to a video highlighting five exceptional African artists based on the school’s Black History Month topic exploring Black visual artists. The partnership between Dawes’ African American Achievement Committee and NU’s African Studies program, now in its sixth year, sees the program gathering artifacts, documents, and visuals related to the special topic that the committee is covering for Black History Month, allowing students to gain a deeper understanding of African culture. This video is part of Dawes’ gallery walk series, which also features brilliant student work that highlights Black visual artists.
A special thank you to Ms. Perry, Dawes Librarian, for sharing the wonderful ways in which Dawes has celebrated Black History Month and connecting students to African culture.

King Arts Students Celebrate Their Identities Through Milo’s Museum
|
Third through fifth grade students at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Literary and Fine Arts School used literature to celebrate Black History Month and express their identities! Students read the story Milo’s Museum by Zetta Elliot, which tells the story of a young child named Milo and the unique way in which she celebrates who she is. While visiting a museum, Milo finds it difficult to find anything in the institution that tells the story of her culture or her family. Resolving to find a medium to showcase her rich cultural heritage, Milo creates her own museum that reflects her and her family’s story! After exploring the book, students were asked to imagine that they were going to open a museum that celebrated them and their stories. Students found objects that they would put in a museum that would tell their story. What a great way to use the powerful tool of storytelling to celebrate who we are!

Reminder: Continue to Complete Your Student’s Daily Health Certification!
|
This is a friendly reminder for D65 families, whose students have returned in-person, to continue keeping up the important momentum of completing daily health certifications. To help guide families and parents/caregivers through daily health certifications, D65 is providing a helpful video overviewing the important and easy steps within the process!
Self Certifications are used to monitor symptoms of illness and potential exposure to COVID-19 and must be completed daily for each child, prior to entering into any D65 school building. Staff will check to ensure that certifications are complete upon student arrival to school. The self-certification process is easy, takes two minutes or less per child, and can be completed in multiple languages.
Visit our website to access information related to daily health certifications and review our helpful one-page overview (available in English and Spanish) related to health certifications.
