University City

Racquet Club

Dear UCRC Tennis Community,

Week #2 is almost in the books of the club taking over running the day-to-day operations of UCRC. There are still lots of changes on the way, so please bear with us as I'm sure we'll encounter hiccups and speed bumps, but we're confident the changes in store for the club will lead to greater success and a club with more services and amenities while remaining a relaxed place to play tennis.

HAPPY 4th of JULY!!

When the clubhouse closes at 12:30 pm on Tuesday, July 4th, our Court Monitors will be off duty with no afternoon/evening shift scheduled. If you're playing after 12:30, you can go straight to your reserved court.

  • Minors must be accompanied by a parent.
  • The nearest restrooms are located east of the rec center by the pool.
  • The lights will not be on Tuesday evening.
  • Please be sure to LOCK ALL GATES as staff will not be there to check them.
  • Do not give the gate code to anyone unless you know for sure they are members. This is your club; please protect it.

If you notice any issues, please email the office: [email protected]

Clubhouse Renovations

Board members Bob Siegel (on ladder) and Eric Johanson remove decorative wood damaged by termites and dry rot.

Board members Daniel Gant, David Livingston, and Lyn Balagtas made a trip to donate and dispose of decades' worth of "stuff" during our clubhouse cleanup as we make way for renovations and a pro shop.

The Thrasher Termite crew installed and removed the circus tent last week on the clubhouse to facilitate termite fumigation.

Termite fumigation, clubhouse cleanup, landscaping preparations, and damaged wood removal are completed; we continue to clean and sift through years of accumulation of "stuff" in the clubhouse and we've uncovered some gems we'll share with you at a later date.

We've obtained estimates to replace both flat roof sections as well as the asphalt shingles on the peaked roof section; we're looking at about $20k for a new roof with a 10-year warranty as well as removing and replacing the damaged starter and fascia boards. We're also gathering estimates for remodeling both restrooms (wouldn't it be nice to have a floor and commercial-grade fixtures and a fan that functions); it's looking like a $15k cost for both restrooms.

We need your help! Do you have a construction background or DIY expertise? Do you have building materials you could donate like roof shingles or bathroom flooring, such as tile or luxury vinyl plank? Can you spare time to help us paint the clubhouse or landscape the clubhouse entrance or remodel the restrooms? Drop us an email and we'll hopefully develop a list of enthusiastic volunteers for an upcoming work party!

More than anything, your monetary donations will help our remodel go further, faster. Donations are gratefully accepted via Venmo:@ucrc-tennis1 or you can pay by check or credit card at the club in person or send a check by mail. Thank you for your support!

CourtReserve Rollout

We've been busy this week preparing to roll out CourtReserve (CR), which will replace Racquet Desk as our court scheduler, but also help us with overall club management, including memberships and messaging to you, our members, in a timely manner. CR has a lot of functionality and there is a CR app, too, you can download on your phone, which will make reserving courts a breeze!

Soon, each member will receive an email with a link and instructions how to create your personalized account online at our CR member portal or through the CR app. You'll be able to set up a payment profile and register for clinics, lessons, ball machine rental, and guest fees at the time of court reservations all through the app or online portal. Easy peasy! You'll also receive a reminder when your annual membership renewal is within 30 days, so you can renew just as easily.

Some other changes associated with CourtReserve.....

  • Checking in: you will no longer have to sign in on a paper clipboard…..there will be two ways to check in when you come to the club:
  • 1) we will issue a membership card for every member that we encourage you to attach to your tennis bag; it has a barcode that you can scan when you come to the club to play. There will be a $5 fee to replace a lost card.
  • 2) Alternatively, you'll be able to tap the barcode icon in the upper right hand corner of your phone screen in the CR app and then scan the barcode
  • Members will be able to reserve courts up to 4 days in advance beginning at 8 pm each night instead of the current 12:01 am that has left some of our players bleary-eyed.
  • Many of our members play each week on the same day/time, so we're going to create events in CR called "Open Play". You will be able to register for each Open Play event at no charge and we can set these to be longer than the 2 hour limit for doubles, since it will be a club event. Having these events will encourage other members to come out and play, allow nonmembers to pay the guest fee and join in (and maybe decide to become a member), and help us with a requirement of our Special Use Permit: the City Parks and Rec Dept mandates that 20% of our court hours be available to nonmembers.

Keep an eye on your inbox over the next week for the CourtReserve rollout!

The Return of Clinics and Lessons

Clinics will resume the week of July 10th when our new staff of instructors are in place. By then, we expect to have CourtReserve in place, too, so please begin checking the schedule for lots of opportunities to register and pay for clinics right in the CR app or online portal and improve your play while having a blast.

Private Lessons: if you're interested in scheduling a private lesson, until we make the switch to CourtReserve in the near future, please continue to email Aurelie directly via [email protected] to request details on private lessons.
