Volume 1, Issue 6 - September, 2023

President's Letter

Dear Friends,

The arrival of September signals not only the changing of seasons but also a fresh beginning, filled with excitement and boundless opportunities.

Just as the Chicago Harbor Lighthouse has stood as a beacon of hope and guidance to countless mariners, this new school year promises to illuminate our lives with knowledge, growth, and inspiration. Whether you are a student, a parent, a teacher, or simply someone who appreciates the power of education, this is a moment to celebrate.

Our commitment to the Chicago Harbor Lighthouse and its preservation reflects a dedication to preserving our beloved city's rich history and heritage. Similarly, the start of a new academic year allows us to uphold the traditions of learning and personal development at our community's heart. As we embark on this educational journey, let us remember the lessons of resilience and adaptability that our lighthouse has taught us. Just as it has weathered storms and guided ships safely through the night, we can overcome challenges and navigate the uncharted waters of a new school year. Together, we can guide our students, helping them find their way to success.

Our lighthouse has always been a symbol of hope. Our vision is to create a “Classroom on the Lakefront” to provide students with a unique opportunity to learn about our city’s rich maritime history in a very special setting. In the coming months, the Friends of the Chicago Harbor Lighthouse will continue our mission to support and protect this iconic landmark. We will also explore ways to collaborate with local schools and educational organizations to promote maritime history and environmental awareness.

Thank you for your unwavering support of our organization and the Chicago Harbor Lighthouse. Together, we will ensure that its light continues to shine for generations.

Wishing you all a fantastic start to the new school year filled with joy, learning, and

endless possibilities.

Be Safe and Be Well!

Regards,

Kurt Lentsch

Friends of the Chicago Harbor Lighthouse Names

Nick Naber Board Member/Treasurer

Whether it was the Point Betsie Lighthouse in Frankfort Michigan or the Big Red further south in Holland, lighthouses have been a vivid part of Nick Naber’s childhood. A Michigan native and currently Chicago-based management consultant, Nick feels a nostalgic connection to these beacons of the lake.

It’s no wonder then, that Nick has joined the effort to preserve the Chicago Harbor Lighthouse as the newly appointed board member and treasurer of Friends of the Chicago Harbor Lighthouse (FOCHL).

A power boater – he docks “Tinker,” his Hinckley Picnic Boat at Belmont Harbor - and active volunteer with the Chicago Yacht Club, Nick has had ample opportunity to view the Lighthouse up close.

“I’ve always thought of the Lighthouse as Chicago’s foremost maritime icon,” says Nick. “It’s exciting to be on the ground floor of the effort to preserve this beautiful structure.”

As a principal at FCM management consultants, Nick is a transformation leader, who orchestrates corporate acquisitions and process optimization for private equity companies and their portfolio companies. Prior to joining FCM, Nick worked at Nielsen as Chief of Staff to the Chief Operating Officer, charged with supporting the execution of the company’s global strategy.

“Nick comes with a wealth of experience in finance and a passion for our mission," says FOCHL president, Kurt Lentsch. “From day one, Nick has hit the ground running, implementing new accounting software and streamlining financial processes to enhance transparency and efficiency. His expertise will be instrumental in shaping a bright and prosperous future for our organization.”

Charter Boat Operators…We Need Your Help to Preserve, Restore and Celebrate the Chicago Harbor Lighthouse!

The iconic Chicago Harbor Lighthouse is a testament to the city's rich maritime history and has been a symbol of strength and resilience for generations. However, today, it faces challenges threatening its existence and historical significance.

As charter operators, you have a unique opportunity to be our ally in spreading the message about the current status of this historic landmark and our mission to preserve, restore, and celebrate it.

The Chicago Harbor Lighthouse, with its distinctive white tower, has guided countless vessels safely into the harbor for over a century. Despite its enduring legacy, the lighthouse requires attention. Harsh weather conditions and the passage of time have taken their toll, leading to significant wear and tear.

This is where we seek your support. As charter operators, you have the privilege of taking visitors on unforgettable journeys across the mesmerizing waters of Lake Michigan.

By sharing the story of the Chicago Harbor Lighthouse during your trips, you can raise awareness about its current state and the importance of safeguarding it for future generations. We have a Tour Guide Fact Sheet and Charter Cards you can pass out to your customers.

Our mission is twofold: to undertake extensive restoration work to maintain the lighthouse's structural integrity and historical accuracy. Secondly, we aim to celebrate its storied past by creating a captivating visitor center that educates tourists about its significance in shaping the city's maritime narrative.

Your assistance is crucial in amplifying our message. By incorporating details about the Chicago Harbor Lighthouse's plight

into your tours and social media channels, you can reach a wider audience and inspire a collective effort to save this beloved landmark.

Furthermore, your charter guests can contribute directly to the cause, generating much-needed funds for the restoration and celebration projects.

Let us join hands in this noble endeavor and become ambassadors for the Chicago Harbor Lighthouse. Together, we can ensure that this historical gem continues to shine its light for many more generations to come, guiding both ships and hearts along the captivating shores of Lake Michigan.
