Saturday's (Sept 23rd) Fall Community Meeting & FIPPOA Board Elections

Dear Karen,

Our community comes together twice each year to discuss important issues facing the Pines and to review the many different projects FIPPOA is undertaking to address them. We will also be electing four FIPPOA directors. You will have the opportunity to hear from each of the candidates before ballots are cast.

After the election, we will highlight several recent and future projects undertaken by FIPPOA to address opportunities and challenges facing the Pines. As is customary, the meeting will conclude with an open microphone for anyone to ask questions or share thoughts.

We begin at 10AM with breakfast pastries and coffee. The meeting will start promptly at 10:30AM inside at Whyte Hall. Check out the agenda and reports issued by local Pines organizations.

All are welcomed and encouraged to attend. And for those of you concerned about melting in the rain, please take comfort that we will meet inside the building in the Brandon Fradd Theatre.

Back by Popular Demand: Solar in the Pines

The Environmental Stewardship Task Force held a Solar Town Hall this spring. It was both well attended and well received. We heard from many residents who were unable to attend asking if there would be another opportunity. In response, the Task Force has organized another Town Hall next Saturday, September 30th beginning at 10:30AM at Whyte Hall. If you have any interest at all in learning about the cost, benefit, and process for solarizing your Pines home, I encourage you to attend.

Lyme Disease Prevention and Rodent Control

FIPPOA spends over $40,000 each year in preventive measures to enhance the health and safety of the community. Every Spring and Fall, we arrange placement of Thermacell Tick Tubes throughout the community to help control the disease spreading tick population. Similarly, we retain a pest control specialist to help control rodent populations in the Pines. Just a few years ago, the cost of these programs was covered primarily by generous donations from the community. While we have recently been in the position to cover the cost though the Pines Foundation’s operating budget, we also encourage your support to maintain the programs. You may make a tax-deductible donation here.

Post Office Closing Date

The Post Office will close for the season on Saturday, October 14th. Please be sure any future delivery orders you place are delivered prior to that date as any received after Oct 14th, will be returned to sender. Also, please consider purchasing from our Post Office the stamps you will need in the off-season. Revenue generation is one of the key factors used in evaluating how our Post Office performs.

Northwell Sponsored Community Clean-up

Northwell Health organized a volunteer clean-up of the Pines just a couple of weeks ago. In total 20 people volunteered, 17 from Northwell and 3 from the Pines. They covered all the public areas of the community from each and every boardwalk. About 25 bags were filled with approximately 7 pounds of trash in each. The improvement was immediately noticeable, and we appreciate that Northwell chose the Pines for one of their employee community give-back events.

Community Closing Party

I am please to announce that our annual FIPPOA Community Closing Party will be held at Whyte Hall on Saturday, October 21st, 5PM to 7PM. More information to follow.

See you on Saturday!

Mike Jaggi

The Pines Community lost Mike Jaggi on August 11, 2023. Mike, 63, resided in Bay Shore with his wife, Tammy, and their daughters Caitlin and Samantha. Mike, a Retired NYC Transit Police Officer, began working in the Pines in 1996 providing landscaping services. He served as a Director of the Greater Fire Island Pines Chamber of Commerce from its inception until his death working with other community members to enhance the Pines for everyone.

Mike was an outdoorsman who enjoyed hiking, kayaking, camping, volleyball, and any time spent in or by the water. He was a PADI Certified SCUBA Instructor and truly enjoyed teaching others about the sport. Mike’s generous spirit and his innate desire to help others will be missed by many in the Pines community. Mike and his family were uplifted after his Leukemia diagnosis by many in the Pines that showed their support through great acts of kindness as well as emotional and financial support. For this they will be forever grateful. Tammy and their Crew will continue to operate Flower Girls serving the Community that he loved so very much.

Nathan Laffin

This heartfelt message was sent to me by Frank Rivera, Nathan's surviving husband:

My beloved husband Nathan Laffin (age 56) passed away peacefully on Tuesday September 12th surrounded by his family. Nathan and I are part-time residents of Fisherman’s Path and we shared many beautiful memories here. There is nothing that comes close to how beautiful the vast ocean is with its rage and stillness. The beauty of natural wildlife here amongst meticulously designed homes and all walks of life that gather from New York City and beyond. Nathan believed in conservation on Fire Island and being mindful of our consumption, waste and composting. The Pines is a sanctuary and should be treated as such. His memory lives on through me, our daughter Lisette and the rest of his family in Vermont and New Hampshire.
