GOHi co-hosts second LMG training workshop

The Leadership, Management and Governance (LMG) project implementing partners – The Ohio State University Global One Health initiative (GOHi), Texas Tech University and Oklahoma State University – in collaboration with the Ethiopian Ministry of Education and the U.S. Embassy in Addis Ababa, organized a two-day training workshop for the second cohort of university leaders in Addis Ababa from August 14-15, 2023. The LMG program in Ethiopian Higher Education aims to enhance the capacity of Ethiopian public higher education institutions, improving the governance systems and the quality of education, research and innovation in Ethiopian higher education. The 25 Ethiopian university presidents and vice presidents will be at Ohio State's campus October 22-25.

Wang published in “Zoonoses and Public Health”

Shu-Hua Wang, GOHi director of research and implementation science, was involved in research that was recently published in “Zoonoses and Public Health” titled “Infrequent intrahousehold transmission of Clostridioides difficile between pet owners and their pets.” This work examined the frequency of inter-species C. difficile transmission by comparing fecal isolates from dogs and cats belonging to people with C. difficile infection with fecal isolates from their owners to see if they were genetically related.

GOHi provides real-time PCR training

Experts from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and GOHi provided real-time PCR training to detect genetic markers associated with Carbapenem Resistance as part of the CDC-funded Global Action in Healthcare Network Antimicrobial Resistance (GAIHN-AR) project. GOHi team members Zelalem Mekuria and Tadesse Eguale provided virtual and e-learning modules for staff members from the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI) on basic laboratory and molecular biology using the CDC e-learning platform.

TOT training on clinical specimen collection with EPHI

As part of the effort to build the capacity for detecting Multidrug-Resistant Organisms (MDROs) in Ethiopia, GOHi, in collaboration with the EPHI, has been actively engaged in the provision of Training of Trainers (TOT) for healthcare workers at the facility level. As part of TOT, the participants will lead training annually for selected clinicians and laboratory professionals at their respective health facilities and public health laboratories in the country.

GOHi hosts IPC training

Continuing its efforts to improve Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) in selected healthcare facilities, the GOHi Eastern Africa office conducted several IPC-focused trainings. As part of GOHi's objective to build health care professionals' capacity, GOHi provided an introductory half-day session for implementing contact precautions for 170 staff members of Tikur Anbesa Specialized Hospital and Zewditu Memorial Hospital over several days. This training will enable TPUs to implement contact precautions for patients with targeted multi-drug resistance pathogens.

Review of AEFI surveillance

In collaboration with the Ethiopian Food and Drug Authority (EFDA), GOHi organized a meeting to review Ethiopia's national adverse event following immunization (AEFI) surveillance system, focusing on data management. Participants discussed the available AEFI data disaggregated by antigen, seriousness and causality assessment status with 20 participants from the EFDA's pharmacovigilance team and technical assistants from partner organizations.

GOHi affiliates published in "Microbiome"

Research carried out through a Connect and Collaborate award support by GOHi and the Infectious Disease Institute at Ohio State on the effects of environment and animal fecal contamination on the gut microbiome and resistome in children from rural Nicaragua was recently published in the journal "Microbiome." This work, led by Barbara Piperata, Department of Anthropology, Ohio State, and carried out in part by GOHi Faculty Advisory Committee members Rebecca Garabed and Jiyoung Lee, investigated the role of environmental contamination in the household on the gut microbiome and resistome of children aged 4 days-6 years in rural Nicaragua applying a One Health perspective. This work builds on previously published work examining the effects of drinking water contamination on the gut microbiome in this population where it was found that the gut microbiota of children from high coliform homes were compositionally different and less diverse than those from low coliform homes.

World Rabies Day: All for 1, One Health for All

The 17th Annual World Rabies Day will take place on September 28 with the theme “All for 1, One Health for All,” emphasizing equity and the need to strengthen overall health systems and services to reach everyone, especially underserved communities, through a One Health approach. This theme highlights how this can be achieved through collaborating and joining forces across sectors and engaging communities. This event will also be an opportunity to share the new Global Alliance for Rabies Control (GARC) “Communities Against Rabies” campaign, which seeks to fill the missing link of local community involvement in rabies control by training the first dog-health focused workforce for rabies elimination. This campaign will also certify rabies centers of excellence and build partnerships with compatible organizations.
