Internal e-Newsletter for Dodgeville School District's Staff

Hello DSD Staff,

I hope that you are settling into the summer months and are able to take some time for yourself and family during the “momentary pause” that is summer break. It is well deserved.

I have informed the school board that I will be retiring at the end of the 23-24 school year. I formally submitted my retirement letter to the board at the June school board meeting, which they approved.

A decision like this is never easy. I sincerely enjoy my job and working with the DSD staff. However, as I enter my 33rd year in education and creep closer to the age of 60, I often entertain thoughts of pursuing other interests and passions while I have the health and energy to do so.

Nevertheless, there remains unfinished work in the DSD that will continue to be my top priority throughout next school year. In particular, I will be preparing for the implementation of the final strand of WCWD, Career and College Readiness. The progress we are making in the areas of PLC work, Focus on Learning and Wellbeing is significant. I want to ensure that the foundation is in place for the sustainability of the plan when I exit at the end of June 2024. I promise that I will continue to work hard for the students, families and staff of the DSD.

Updates will be sent to the staff as appropriate regarding the board’s search for a replacement.

Sincerely,

Paul

Compensation Update

I have been working on the salary schedule audit for professional staff. My hope is to have the audit complete by mid-July. Once the audit is finished and the board has determined salary increases for all district staff, I will meet individually with professional staff whose placement on the schedule has been impacted by the audit.

Whole Child - Whole Dodgeville Update

As summer months begin, the PD Mondays for next school year are being edited and reviewed by the administration. For example, the positive feedback from the May 8 PD day on vertical articulation, has led the administrative team to review where we can align CIPB time between schools to provide more frequent opportunities for staff to collaborate within a particular subject. We will also be editing and assembling the guide for next school year. Kira has been at work on the design end and is working closely with Jacque and I in developing a final draft by the end of July.

We are excited to be sending the Guiding Coalition teams from each building to the PLC Conference in Madison next week. Leading researchers and speakers in the field of education will be presenting. It was a stroke of good luck to have the conference in our “backyard” this year.

Focus on Wellness

July’s focus is on well-child visits, adolescent and teen annual preventive health visits, and sports physicals. It’s a great time to review your child and/or teen’s medical records to ensure they are up to date on things from check-ups to vaccinations—it’s one of the best things you can do to keep your child and community safe, healthy and protected against serious diseases. Your summer schedule probably gets busy, so check now to make sure your child’s healthcare is on-track and they’re ready for the next school year.

Congratulations Retirees!

Congratulations to our 2023 Retirees,

Gina Weier, Brian Kulcinski, Mark Ramthun, and Roy March!

Congratulations to Mrs. Gina Weier, who is retiring after an impressive 35 years of teaching math at Dodgeville High School!

Throughout her tenure at Dodgeville School District, Mrs. Weier has made a lasting impact on countless students and colleagues. When asked about her favorite memory from her time at DHS, she fondly shared, "There are many great things about working at DHS. I have had the opportunity to work with some excellent colleagues and teach students with a variety of math skills. I have grown both professionally and personally through my experiences at DHS. I will genuinely miss the 'aha' moments from students in math class."

As she embarks on the next chapter of her life, Mrs. Weier intends to continue working, have fun, and most importantly, spend more time with her family and friends.

Congratulations to Mr. Brian Kulcinski, who is retiring after 28 years of teaching at the Dodgeville High School. During that time, he has served as the High School Librarian, Coach, and Social Studies Teacher.

When asked what he’ll miss the most, Mr. Kulcinski responded: “What I'll miss most about working at DHS are the amazing students and co-workers I am able to interact with. We've got really good people here and that will be something I will be sad to leave.”

In the next chapter of his life, Mr. Kulcinski is hoping to find volunteer opportunities to stay connected to the community, do some reading and research about the area and its history, and travel to new places and revisit the places he loves. His wife, DHS Math Teacher Mrs. Kulcinski is looking forward to having dinner ready every night when she gets home.

Congratulations to Mr. Mark Ramthun, who has dedicated 24 years of his life to Dodgeville High School. Throughout his tenure, Mr. Ramthun cherished the relationships he built with students and staff, “My favorite thing about working at Dodgeville is how friendly the students and staff have been. The entire Dodgeville community has been great to my family and I. I will miss the day to day interactions with the kids and staff.”

As he embarks on this new chapter, Mr. Ramthun has exciting plans ahead. This summer, he will be exploring Europe alongside the Wisconsin Ambassadors of Music. Following his adventures, he will take on a part-time role as the route runner for Blue Note Music in Platteville and will lend his support to the concession stand at American Players Theater. He is also looking forward to having more time to play in various music groups around the area as he still loves to play the trombone whenever possible.

While he may consider substitute teaching in the future, Mr. Ramthun will initially embrace the freedom retirement offers.

Congratulations to Mr. Roy March on a well-deserved retirement after 16 dedicated years in our district. Roy started in 2007 as a Custodian at Ridgeway Elementary School, and he has since worked in every one of our buildings!

When asked about his favorite thing from his time at DSD, Roy replied: "My favorite thing about working in the Dodgeville School District and what I’ll miss the most are the people I get to work with."

In retirement, Roy humorously declared that he is looking forward to doing "nothing!" However, we know he will stay busy working on his family farm, doing more fishing, and spending time with his grandson, as well as eagerly anticipating the arrival of another grandchild in August.

Countdown to Graduation!

This year, eight members of our Dodgeville School District staff had children in the DHS Class of 2023! To celebrate this milestone in their lives, we highlighted our staff members and their children in a countdown to graduation.
