The Nevins Library is excited about a new program we are doing with Merrimack College, and we need your help!

We are looking for a few adults (aged 60+) who have some time in September to work with Merrimack College students to tell your story.

Then, in October, you’ll have a chance to participate in a series of storytimes for preschoolers that will feature a story from your life!

If you are interested or would like more information, please email the professors in charge of the project: IntergenerationalLearningLab@merrimack.edu or call the Main Desk of the Library: 978-686-4080.

Book Groups are Back!

Isn’t it fun to talk about a book you just read with others? The Nevins Library hosts several different Book Groups to do just that – and most of these groups start their new year in September.

We have groups for children, teens, and several different themed groups for adults. It’s a great way to get together with friends to talk about books and current topics.

Whether you’ve participated in our Book Groups before, or not, there is always room for new members.

Come to a meeting and see if you like it! Check out the links below, our calendar of events, or just ask at the Main Desk (978-686-4080) for more information about any of our Book Groups.

New Graphic Medicine Kits Available

What is Graphic Medicine? It's the intersection between comics and healthcare.

Stop by the New Books room and check out the three (so far, more will be coming) kits on display that we have for you to check out.

They contain 2-4 Graphic Novels on a specific topic, and additional helpful paper materials/links about the topic that you can keep!

There's even a feedback form in there if you have an idea for other kits!

What's Happening in Youth Services?

School Year Programming Starts!

The Youth Services Department had a great time enjoying summer programs with our young patrons – not to mention the hundreds of beads we handed out to kids all summer long to reward them for hours and hours of reading! Thank you to all the children, families, and caretakers who joined us for the fun.

Now it’s time to start up our school-year programming, and you’ll see some old favorites return in September, plus some ongoing standards and a few new programs. For example, we’ll start up Saturday programming again, including the popular “Donuts with Dad” and its new counterpart, “Muffins with Mom”; we’re also adding a new “Community Connections Storytime” where kids can meet municipal and professional community members who will read aloud stories and answer questions about their jobs – this month’s honored guest is State Representative Estela Reyes!

September will also feature several special programs, including a Percy Jackson book discussion and a book release party, another wonderful art program with Lisa Buglione, and a free bilingual program at the Methuen Memorial Music Hall that sets Mo Willem stories to music.

Book clubs for different age groups will resume this fall – we’re bringing back the “Who Is? What Is” club (ages 7-9), where kids will talk about everyone’s favorite nonfiction book series, as well as our Graphic Novel club for kids aged 8-12. Also returning to the schedule is our Homeschool Hub program, where homeschoolers can connect with each other and explore a different topic each month.

Another new and special program is a monthly Parent Peers Group: Are you a parent of young children (infant-5 years old)? Would you like to connect with other adults whose kids are in that age range – exchange ideas, information, stories, and advice? (Or just chat about anything!) Come to this monthly program to spend some time with your peers; we’ll provide age-appropriate toys to occupy your little ones while you enjoy some grown-up conversation.

Last but not least, once again we’ll offer the popular 26-week “Alphabits” program series for ages 2-5: each week’s session will focus on a different letter, and even if your children already know the alphabet they’ll enjoy the stories, crafts, and company of other preschool children. (When you sign up for the first session, you’ll automatically be registered for all 26 sessions, to be held on Wednesday mornings.)

Keep an eye on the Youth Services calendar and Facebook page to learn the latest about upcoming programs, fundraisers, and special events – there’s always something interesting going on!

Happy September, and Happy Reading!
