THE APOSTLE PAUL – LESSON 17

THE MACEDONIAN CALL

After leaving Antioch of Pisidia, Paul, Silas, and Timothy travelled throughout the Roman provinces of Phrygia and Galatia in Asia Minor (present-day Turkey) but were forbidden by the Holy Ghost to preach any further in Asia.

They travelled to the east coast of Asia to Mysia and the port city of Troas on the coast of the Aegean Sea which juts out of the north side of the Mediterranean Sea.

While they were at Troas, Paul received a vision of a man of Macedonia asking him to come over across that sea to help them. Macedonia was in Europe just above Greece. The two countries were so closely associated that they were almost like one country. Alexander the Great was the great conqueror from Greece 400 years earlier, but Alexander’s father was Philip of Macedon (Macedonia).

The missionary party promptly set sail for the Roman province of Macedonia from Troas. They stopped midway at the Island of Samothracia, then landed in Macedonia at the port city of Neapolis. They then proceeded to the port city of Philippi. Luke had joined them at some undetermined part of the journey and was present with them at Philippi for the ministry in Macedonia.

Luke would join Paul for short periods from time to time. This qualified him to write the Book of The Acts of the Apostles as an eyewitness. Four passages say “we,” indicating his physical presence (Acts 16:10-17; 20:5-15; 21:1-18; and 17:1-28.) Other times it was “they” when he was not with them.

Tomorrow we will see what powerful churches they established in their venture into Europe.

ALMOST THOU PERSUADEST ME

One of the saddest verses is found in Acts 26. The apostle Paul was brought before King Agrippa II and being a Roman citizen was permitted to speak for himself. He testified to the King of all that God had done for him through his conversion and told the King that was called to the gentiles, (including the King) by Jesus to be a witness to them.

At the culmination of his witness to the King he asked Agrippa in Acts 26:27, “King Agrippa, believest thou the prophets? I know that thou believest.” At that point, the king answered Paul in verse 28, “Paul, almost thou persuadest me to be a Christian.”

He never did accept the Lord as Savior. That is why that verse is one of the saddest verses in the bible. One thing is for certain. Paul witnessed to him to give him a chance to receive Christ. When he didn’t respond positively, it would seal his fate for eternity.

Every person that we meet gives us an opportunity to share Christ. We never know if it will be their last chance or not. Many Christians never witness because of fear, but the simplest way to witness is just to ask this question. “Are you a Christian?” Many think they are Christians because they aren’t Muslim or Hindu or any other religion. When they say yes, I always ask them, “have you been born again?” Many respond with “no.” Then you can share how to be born again and they can receive salvation.

Like King Agrippa there are thousands that need to make this decision. I pray that you will be able to persuade some to do just that so they will be with Jesus for eternity.

Why do I talk about souls and salvation? I believe time is short. I believe persecution is coming to Christians soon, so we must do what we can, while we can, where we can, with whom we can. Then we will have no regrets.
