CLIMATE ACTION

Earth hit an unofficial record high temperature this week

The Globe and Mail

Earth’s average temperature on July 5th remained at an unofficial record high set the day before. And for the seven-day period ending Wednesday, the daily average temperature was .08 degrees Fahrenheit (.04 degrees Celsius) higher than any week in 44 years of record-keeping, according to data from the University of Maine’s Climate Reanalyzer, a tool that uses satellite data and computer simulations to measure the world’s condition.

Are rural health care facilities prepared for climate change?

Healthcare Facilities Today

While all health care facilities need to prepare for emergencies, rural facilities need to address several issues that urban and suburban facilities might not.

Climate change is causing more severe weather events outside of their typical environments. Facility managers in hospitals and other health care facilities need to be prepared for the changes their regions are seeing regardless of where they’re located.

Don't call it vegan: What hospitals are learning about nudging people to eat greener

WBUR

It's hard to persuade people to cut back on meat. The Brigham and Women's Faulkner Hospital started trying about 20 years ago for health reasons. "Meatless Mondays" generated a lot of complaints at the hospital.

Bird-friendly building design: Enhancing safety and sustainability

Healthcare Facilities Today

Buildings and birds often do not get along. Maintenance and engineering managers in health care facilities have a long history of dealing with birds.

Unfortunately, birds’ interactions with buildings often are deadly. Bird collisions with buildings in the United States likely kill between 365 million and 1 billion birds.

In the case of health care facilities, managers need to be especially aware of the role of natural light and exposure to nature in the patient healing process.
