We moved to Lexington because of its schools. We stayed because of its library!

We’re delighted to share a few stories from our neighbors about why Cary Library is their “special place." What brings you here?

Before the pandemic, I would visit the library several times a week. I am a former English teacher, and the library was my "happy place." My nine-year-old daughter, Cathy, has loved Cary ever since her toddler years, when she would enter the Children's room, head for the fish tank, and call out, "Hello, books! Hello, fishies!"

Being separated from the library was one of the hardest parts of the pandemic for our family. We were so grateful for curbside pickup, but we missed the interior of the library desperately. Cathy and I returned to the Children's room on the very first day it opened to the public. Our feelings? Sheer joy!

A library is the heart of a town! In the 55 years I have lived in Lexington, I have witnessed Cary’s evolution from a modest small-town library to a modern, technologically advanced, well-equipped place where people of all ages gather.

In 2000, I helped fundraise for Cary’s renovation. Not only did this help to make Cary the library it is today, but its reputation also spread far and wide. Many years ago, my children honored me by donating a display cabinet on Cary’s main floor. I am proud to be the only living person to be so honored! Cary is a home away from home for Lexingtonians!

When I got into high school, the library became more than just a library. The day before a group project was due, I found many flaws in the presentation. My classmates and I can return home and fix our parts separately. But at home, many things can distract us. We need a place that is quiet and has many resources available. I suggested going to Cary Library. It turned out to be the perfect place for us to work. The environment was relaxing yet a bit serious. It kept us productive. In the end, we got the work done pretty quickly.

The library is a middle ground between school and home.

I would gladly call it a second home!
