Vision Zero Back to School Traffic Safety Tips

Schools across the Greater Houston area are back in session this month, and the Houston Vision Zero team urges you to prioritize school traffic safety this month and every month!

Since 2017, Houston had reported 1,509 crashes involving school buses and 327 crashes in school zones. Distracted drivers and driving over the speed limit in school zones were two key contributing factors. Whether you are a student, parent, or simply a responsible Houstonian, these tips can help make the school year safe and happy for everyone. Help us to achieve our goal of zero traffic deaths and serious injuries in our City.

For drivers:

  • Always use the designated drop-off/pick-up lane for the safe arrival and departure of your children. Never stop in traffic to drop off your child.

  • Stay off your phone! There is no place for distracted driving, especially in school zones.

  • Remember, the “School Zone” speed limit is 20 mph. Reduce speed and drive with extra caution.

  • Young walkers and bicycle riders can be unpredictable. Be alert for a child who might dart into the roadway near a bus stop, intersection, or after exiting a vehicle. Be vigilant and ready to react.

  • Children may need to cross the road when they board or leave the school bus. Never pass a stopped school bus from either direction. Don't go around a stopped school bus until its lights are off, the stop sign is retracted, and children have left the area.

  • Commit to distraction-free driving. Keep your hands on the steering wheel, eyes on the road ahead, and complete focus on driving.

For Walkers:

  • When walking, be aware of your surroundings and pay attention to the school crossing guards; they are there for your safety.

  • Look left, right, and left again before crossing the street.

  • It’s always best to walk on sidewalks or paths and cross at street corners, using traffic signals and crosswalks.

  • Make eye contact with drivers before crossing the street.

  • Pull your headphones down or turn off the volume before crossing the street.

  • Stay alert for cars that are turning or backing up.

For Bikers:

  •  Practice the bike route to school before the first day of school.

  • Always wear a bicycle helmet, no matter how short or long the ride is.

  • Ride on the right, in the same direction as auto traffic, and ride in bike lanes if they are present.

  • Use appropriate hand signals.

  • Respect traffic lights and stop signs.
