Little Steps, Big Changes by Jean Wible

Many of us are feeling stressed, tired, overwhelmed. Can we spring into growth with nature? How? We need to feel connected to nature, bathe in the forests, see the colors. The smallest steps are often the ones that can help us the most. In this stressful world where so much feels beyond our control, we need more than ever to recognize what we do have, see the beauty around us and let nature heal us and energize us. Too often we try to grow by leaps and bounds – and find ourselves unable to reach these goals. Let’s simplify, take tiny steps that connect us to nature, community, friends. Recognize the power of small.
- commit to simply noticing one thing every morning, colors perhaps. As you start your day, notice the deep green of the grass newly growing, or the light green of budding leaves, or the yellow of the daffodil. See it, acknowledge it, connect with it as you let your heart open to dwell only on that small beauty. Heartmath.org has shown us that this simple of a practice will change the chemistry of our heart and brain and help us to find balance and connection;
- commit to once a month connecting with a friend. If you can get together, great. If not, just call and talk. Our relationships are so valuable. Give them a little time and they can raise our vibration of love and that will spread through our lives and our world;
- do a 5 minute movement practice, start once a week (see tai chi below, or stretches);
-
try a new routine. AWC would like to commit to starting a small walking program for beginners. Walking in nature with others can open our hearts, make connections and raise vibrations. If there is enough interest, Personal Trainer Jacki Szimanski will lead a group on a simple walk so we can gently get moving again, reconnect with the earth by walking an easy nature trail, and connect with a community of others on their healing path. We are open to your feedback to let us know what would work for you, but we were thinking of meeting 1x/week for 6 week intervals. If you are interested, email us at jeanwibleawc@gmail.com
Small steps, connections to the incredible gifts the world gives us each day. Let’s get moving - gently!

Now that it’s getting lighter outside and the weather is getting warmer we usually start to feel more energetic and excited about being out and about again. However, after so many months and years of stress and changes to how we normally live our lives we’ve been hearing from so many of our patients that they are still feeling “off”, depressed, achy, and exhausted. Maybe their digestion is off, their sleep patterns have changed, they’re experiencing brain fog or memory issues, or their immune system is not quite what it used to be. In addition to addressing these concerns with acupuncture we decided to partner with a Licensed Nutritionist to add another layer of tools to restore balance and help with the healing process. We would like to formally welcome Ms. Jenny Libkhen to our AWC family. Jenny has worked for years helping people rebalance their bodies and regain their health and vitality. She will be an amazing asset to our team and to our patients. We already have a list of patients interested in working with Jenny, so if you wish to use her services, please feel free to call the office to set up an appointment. Below is her very impressive bio!!
Yevgeniya (Jenny) Libkhen is a functional nutritionist and a holistic health consultant. She is a Licensed Dietitian Nutritionist (LDN), a Certified Nutrition Specialist (CNS®), and is a Certified Integrative Mental Health Professional (CIMHP).
Through food, mindfulness, lifestyle changes, consistent support, education, motivation, and encouragement, Jenny supports her clients through the journey of improving their health, optimizing their body’s function, and enhancing well-being.
Jenny’s practice philosophy is focused on bio-individuality. Each client is seen as a whole person, not as a disease. Each person is believed to be unique, requiring a highly personalized approach for their specific situation, state of physical and mental health, and pace of life. Jenny strives to meet each client where they are, hold their hand and walk the health journey with them: holding space, honoring the present, and offering support at every step and at every pause.
Jenny’s clinical focus is on optimizing function of the body through identifying potential root causes, physiological pathways involved, and supporting the entire system with food, movement, stress reduction, herbs, supplements, and other modalities.
Jenny has extensive experience working with clients suffering from autoimmune conditions and immune-related disorders such as Hashimoto’s and Rheumatoid arthritis, food allergies, and diabetes type 1, 1.5, and 2; diseases of the digestive system, including Celiac and non-Celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS), Crohn’s and Ulcerative Colitis, IBS, and other GI disturbances; and neurological conditions such as dementia, Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s. Jenny is passionate about women's health and has been working with women of all ages and life stages to support infertility, PCOS, menstrual dysregulation and menopausal transition, pregnancy, and lactation, as well as mental health. Jenny also works with children of all ages, some of whom are the result of her support with infertility.
Food is the lens through which Jenny experiences the world. The quote by Hippocrates “Let Food Be Thy Medicine and Medicine Be Thy Food” is Jenny’s professional slogan. Custom-making cakes entirely out of fruit and offering fruit and vegetable decorating workshops is Jenny’s creative outlet. Exploring new ingredients, new cuisines, cooking, and adopting recipes from around the world is how Jenny has fun. This passion for food and advanced culinary skills is what sets Jenny apart from other nutritionists. Jenny offers individually designed dietary plans that address the client’s health needs while honoring and preserving their heritage and traditional diets.
Jenny holds a Bachelor of Science in Holistic Nutrition with Herbology Specialization degree and a Master of Science in Nutrition and Integrative Health degree. Jenny is the owner of "Health Is A Gift", a holistic health consulting practice that opened in 2007. Health Is A Gift is solely referral-based, its clientele is spread across the globe.

Spring into Spring by Jenny Libkhen

After the warm spell and the snowstorm, Spring is finally making its arrival.
Spring is an exciting time of the year for me. Spring is the time of reawakening, a time of rapid, noticeable change, a time for renewal and rebirth. I love taking walks on the same path in spring and notice how everything around me changes, sometimes in only a few weeks and sometimes in a matter of days.
I used to not love spring as much. Although I enjoyed the longer warmer days, for me, spring was a marker that winter was over, and summer was coming. It was a reminder that there will not be any more snow decorating every surface in beautiful and magical whiteness, or ice skating on a frozen pond, or going skiing in a snow-covered forest. I was also dreading the soon-approaching oppressive summer heat and suffocating humidity.
This all changed in March of 2020. As the pandemic took over the world and everything shut down all that was left, still accessible, permitted, and safe was nature. I started going for walks, every day, taking the same route (the only one that was safe for walking on the road) and I discovered spring!
I saw the spring for what it is, in the present, with all its power of survival, rebirth, and beauty.
I walked and each day I noticed a new bud, a new blade of grass, a flower splashing color as if to reawaken those who passed by. It was a life changing experience for me. It was a meditation like no other. That spring, I felt more present than ever before. Watching Spring unfold in front of my eyes and take full charge of all that surrounded me gave me solace, offered me comfort, and allowed hope to blossom amid the darkness of the stress, the worry, and the losses of the pandemic.
As we enter spring this year, with the pandemic almost behind us, I invite you to celebrate life, find joy, and cherish peace through the lens of ever-changing and persevering nature. As seasons change, we learn that nothing is forever, that this too shall pass, and that life still goes on. From the coldness and the nakedness of winter we will soon be witnessing explosions of color, listening to eruptions of bird songs, and feeling the joy of warming sunshine.
Change is coming! Happy Spring!

According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, the season of Spring is associated with the element of wood empowering the liver and gallbladder. The governing color for both organs and for spring is green, while the primary taste is sour.
Like the season that is known for renewal, liver is the organ responsible for spring cleaning the entire body. Liver is the main organ for detoxification and foods such as dark leafy greens, cruciferous vegetables, as well as those that are bitter tasting, support this essential function.
Consider including lots of greens into your spring meals, especially the new seasonal ones such as spring lettuces, asparagus, and spinach. Radishes are also season’s early birds even though they are not green, they are amazing for liver support and enhancement of the digestive process.

My favorite green spring vegetable is asparagus. It is rich in fiber and prebiotics that support digestion and detoxification. Asparagus is a great source of phytonutrients, including glutathione, a powerful antioxidant that supports the immune system and quercetin, a flavonoid that is great at fighting seasonal allergies. Asparagus has a great affinity for liver support and in studies, has even been shown to prevent hangovers!
One way to easily cook asparagus so it stays crunchy and delicious is water steaming it.
You will need just enough water to barely cover the bottom of a shallow frying pan. If you prefer to season your food as it cooks, add a little sea salt to the water; otherwise, you can season the asparagus once it is cooked. Set the pan on high heat. While the water is coming to a boil, rinse the asparagus and cut off the bottom ¼ or ⅓ of the stalk. Asparagus is very fibrous and removing the lower part of the stem will leave you with only the very tender pieces. Add asparagus as soon as the water reaches a boil, and watch the magic happen. To speed things up and to promote even cooking, gently shake the pan or use a spatula to roll the spears so all sides are exposed to the boiling water. As soon as the stalks turn bright green, take them out of the pan and place in a serving dish. The entire process may take anywhere from 1-2 minutes for thinner stalks (female asparagus) to 3-4 min for thick stalks (male asparagus).
Pairing water steamed asparagus with a soft-boiled egg makes for a beautiful, delicious, and nutritious breakfast. My favorite part is to dip the asparagus spears into the runny yolk. Yum!
To enhance your breakfast with even more spring energy, consider making a morning “mojito” with mint tea infused with some lime juice. This can be served hot or over ice.
Bon appétit!
