February 1, 2021

In our 2018 interview with the late Carl Carbin, we received a history lesson.  Mr. Carbin had an impeccable memory, providing details of his childhood, the real estate textbook he studied before obtaining his license, and the segregated neighborhoods of OKC.

He talked about his friend Ira DeVoyd Hall, Sr. and introduced us to Hall's daughter, Dr. Carole Hall Hardeman.

Dr. Hardeman is rightfully proud to share the accomplishments of her family.  One of her siblings is a Harvard graduate, another a Stanford graduate, and a niece is an accomplished Jazz musician.  "We were blessed with wonderful leadership from our parents," Hardeman said.

Her father, Ira DeVoyd Hall, Sr.  was the first REALTOR® to sell homes to African American residents in Oklahoma in the early 1960s, but his many contributions to education and civic involvement also comprise his legacy.

Decades before the passing of the Fair Housing Act, Hall purchased a two-story brick home on NE 9th Street in Oklahoma City, along with the duplex next door.  "The property was under a racial restriction clause at the time," Hardeman mentioned. A neighbor who had just returned from the war was not pleased by the change on his street. He sued Hall for purchasing in that residential block and gained the support of the REALTOR® who sold the house to Hall.

In 1947, three years of litigation ended.  "My father lost the case and our family was evicted from the property at gunpoint." She continued, "At the time, my mother was eight months pregnant with our youngest sister.  We had no place to go and my father was not compensated for the two properties."  They soon relocated to a two-bedroom home, which Hall was eventually able to buy and expand.

Hardeman had been friends with the plaintiff's daughter prior to the lawsuit.  She said, "My parents made sure we did not develop racial resentments, in spite of what happened."

Mr. Carbin explained, "Areas north of 23rd street were out of our reach.  We couldn't sell or buy there." Creston Hills was a prime example of a restricted neighborhood.

Designated housing additions were built, including Carverdale and Garden Oaks . "There was only one housing addition built by a person of color for homeowners of color, " he said.

Later this month we will get an in depth look of this neighborhood and the pioneer real estate developers behind it!
