MEET OUR NEW CLERKS
Please join us in welcoming three new clerks to the Shorewood Public Library! Isaac and Gabby joined the library team in January, and Halea transitioned from shelver to library clerk in December. All three are also students at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Make sure you say hello and welcome to Halea, Isaac, and Gabby the next time you see them at the library!
FROM THE DIRECTOR
I remember the day when I first realized how COVID-19 would impact my daily life. It was February 27, 2020, I was in Nashville at the Public Library Association conference and I received a call from one of our Library Board trustees, Donna Whittle. She told me there was a strong possibility that in the next three weeks, the library would be closing due to the virus that we had been hearing about over the last months. I could barely get my head around the idea.

February 2022 is the two year mark of navigating COVID-19 and it feels important to me to note this milestone. I’ve been reflecting on the many positive outcomes for library services during this time: online registration and renewal of library cards, the advent of the “take and make” program for all ages, curbside pickup and access to more digital content and resources than ever before. I believe we’ve reached another milestone. In March, we will open our meeting rooms for use by community groups using a new software product, Local Hop, and with new streaming capabilities courtesy of American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds. We know and value how important it is to gather and connect in person, and opening the community rooms for use gets us closer to resuming “normal.”

I want to extend gratitude to the staff for making all of this happen, and our faithful library patrons for motivating us and supporting us with probing questions, kind words and thoughtful suggestions over these two years. I look forward to reaching the next major milestones for library services: opening our Early Learning Center, resuming all in-person programing, having all 30 public computers turned on and all furniture back in place. I’m hopeful we will get there sooner rather than later.

LIBRARY DISTRIBUTES N95 MASKS
In late January, the Shorewood Public Library was able to distribute over 1,000 N95 masks to members of the community. Library staff and Library Board trustees assisted with assembling N95 mask packs and distributing them at the library. Thank you to the North Shore Health Department for providing the masks and to our incredible staff and volunteers who made sure distribution was a success!

WHAT WE'RE READING

Featuring the first 25 episodes of Smythe's popular webcomic, Lore Olympus offers a modern take on the story of Hades and Persephone. Smythe's fantastical watercolor art style transfers well into this new format. I found myself flying through this graphic novel in a single sitting, drawn in to the budding romance between Hades and Persephone and the plethora of drama surrounding the cast of Olympians. Smythe's storytelling oscillates between hilarious and heartwarming while also tackling some serious content with care. A great choice for adult readers who enjoy retold classics and contemporary romance!

The newest by Canadian author Miriam Toews (who hails from this librarian’s home province!) is a tragedy wrapped in comedy. Nine year old Swiv’s grandma has moved in with her and her mom, and when Swiv is suspended from school for fighting, Grandma becomes her tutor (of sorts), caretaker and greatest friend. Told by Swiv in the form of a letter to her absent father, Toews explores the way trauma, named and unnamed, impacts generations and the many ways people seek to fight against what is hurting them.

I enjoyed listening to Stephen Graham Jones’ My Heart is a Chainsaw. (Thank you West Allis Public Library for having an audiobook copy!) My Heart is a Chainsaw follows horror movie aficionado Jade Daniels as she navigates high school graduation, a part-time janitorial job, and a slasher film come to life in the small town of Proofrock, Idaho.
Told in first-person narrative, My Heart is a Chainsaw includes Jade's inner thoughts, homework assignments featuring infamous slashers, and a play-by-play narration to the all action. I really liked Jones’ The Only Good Indians, and I am happy to hear that My Heart is a Chainsaw is the first of a trilogy.

INFORMATION YOU CAN TRUST
With so many sources for information, it can be hard to sort out fact from fiction and to determine who to trust.

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services webpage has up-to-date information about the COVID-19 pandemic including data about vaccinations, who is eligible, and where to get a vaccine.
