Embrace the perfection of imperfection
We're hardest on ourselves. Treat yourself like you would your BFF
According to Merriam Webster ...
per·fec·tion·ism | \ pər-ˈfek-shə-ˌni-zəm  \
Definition of perfectionism: a disposition to regard anything short of perfection as unacceptable.

In other words, a perfectionist is a person who refuses to accept any standard short of perfection.

This is certainly one way to self-sabotage! You may not have a perfect day. Maybe you went over your budget, didn't feel like moving much, and so on. In many cases, this one action throws Members off track--not being able to accept anything but perfect, guarantees failure. Because there is no perfect!

But by accepting the imperfect you, you get the strength to move beyond a slip-up!

So, how can we start to move from the need for perfection to embracing being “perfectly imperfect”?

Start with these 4 simple steps ...
then, you can discuss being perfectly imperfect this week in detail with your WW Coach in your Studio or Virtually! Here are some starter thoughts!
Step one is realizing that no one around us actually looks as closely or cares as much about our looks as much as we do.

Really! Think about it! We live in a society that is so self-consumed; no one is paying attention to us as much as we are. And most of us accept this and don’t expect others to be as perfect as we expect to be—we really are hardest on ourselves
Step two is discovering that expecting perfectionism is a “symptom.”

This symptom is affecting all 4 Pillars of the NEW WW PersonalPoints™ program: how you Eat, Exercise, your Mindset, even your Sleep will be better once you give yourself a break! Accepting being imperfect is actually choosing to live with more serenity, coolness, and self-respect.
Step three is to move from thinking others expect us to be perfect. This expectation is, not theirs and not realistic, to begin with.

We move to the positive mindset of knowing our thoughts are ours to control! We have the power to shift our mindset, and embrace the perfection of imperfection!
Step four Treat yourself like you would a friend --it's so helpful and important

Being consumed with perfection clouds our ability to enjoy life and our accomplishments. Having people in our lives who encourage and support us when we need it will lead to a much more relaxed, fulfilling life than constantly striving for perfection, which as a reminder, is an unobtainable goal.

First black woman to win Olympic Gold

Yes, everyone knows that Harriet Tubman freed the bodies and minds of enslaved people. School curriculums love to throw in a quick paragraph about Rosa’s intentional stand against injustice. But there are countless Black women whose names and stories aren’t as widely known but deserve honor, respect, and reverence.

Here is the first trailblazing Black woman you need to know.

Alice Coachman (1923-2014)

Alice Coachman laid the foundation for Black women to dominate in track and field as the first Black woman to win an Olympic goal medal in 1948.

Coachman bested her opponents in the high jump, an incredible feat considering she grew up with limited access to training facilities. Her rise to fame was during a time when society largely frowned upon women in sports.

Coachman’s win later led to her being the first Black woman to become a Coca-Cola spokesperson, which put her on billboards alongside Jesse Owens. She is in the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame (1996), USA Track and Field Hall of Fame (1975), and the United States Olympic Hall of Fame (2004).

Alice Coachman’s accomplishment opened doors for future track legends like Flo Jo, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, and Allyson Felix.

This week's message from DebW
Voice and General Manager, WW Philadelphia
February 2, 2022
Hello WW Philadelphia Members,

Have you ever been on that all-or-nothing teeter-totter?
More times than I want to admit, I’ve given up because I hadn’t executed my food intake, exercise, or some other part of my healthy life plan perfectly. Do you know where it always got me? It got me to a higher number at the scale.

While I worked in the field as a Coach (then called Leader) an especially beautiful Member leaned towards me while standing on the scale and said, “I cheated this week.” I said, “okay, tell me what cheat means to you.” She said, “I ate a couple of extra tablespoons of raisins.” I nodded and said, “it’s going to be okay.”

This Member’s confidence in her ability to lose weight was so connected to an elevated level of perfection that she really thought a couple of tablespoons of raisins would cause a weight gain. She was weighing in for the first time after joining the prior week, had a considerable number of pounds to lose, and was HIGHLY successful on her first week, despite her not meeting her level of perceived perfection.

I can only imagine what would have happened if she had decided to quit because of a few tablespoons of raisins. Her goal to lose weight --her"why" was to be able to travel across the country and visit with her only brother, who was terminally ill-- to see him one last time. The fulfilling story for this Member is she lost over 100 pounds and was able to make the trip
those raisins could have prevented.

So many times, our self-flagellation for getting in two days of activity instead of four or eating a couple of Points over our daily or weekly Points budget stops our road map to success like an east coast-sized pothole bending a rim and ruining a tire. (The potholes here are HUGE!)

I’m here to say, “WW FRIENDS! Get out of your own way.” Allow yourself to be successful, allow yourself to live your life, allow yourself the grace you would allow another.

Weight Watchers really does change lives for the better. It’s an opportunity to do good things for yourself and by doing good things for yourself you can do even better things for others in your life.

Stay well and take care,
DebW
