ELUL REFLECTION

by Jo Strausz Rosen

The month of Elul is the time of year leading up to the High Holidays when we as Jews can uncover and investigate our inner spiritual life and make some changes. The gift of time is a gift to our souls to reflect on who we are, who we want to be and note how far we have come during the past year. During these inner conversations, we can discover areas for change and growth.

Personal reflection brings us special energy that can deepen the experience of our own worship during Rosh Hashanah. Today, we have so much anxiety about the state of our world, our children and grandchildren, our own health and the health of our loved ones and friends. We worry about inflation and poverty and social injustice.

NOMINATION FORM

FRIENDS

Wow, what a week! So many of us enjoyed going to the Maple Theater to see “Golda.” We are so fortunate to have this wonderful partnership with the Maple Theater, which hosts these special JSL screenings. Stay tuned in for an announcement about our next film outing. And thank you to everyone who helped with popcorn, wheelchairs and walkers. It takes a village and JSL is a very special village.

Lives Well Lived

The next big gathering of our JSL village will be at our annual Lives Well Lived fundraiser/friendraiser. Join us on November 14th at the The "J", formerly known as the JCC, where we will launch our book of resident stories, “Don’t Write Me Off,” and enjoy a program of short documentaries on some older adults who are truly living life well. The feature film will be the Oscar winning “Young at Heart,” which tells the story of a late in life romance between two artists. We will also honor and commemorate filmmaker Sue Marx, who made this wonderful film about her father, Louis Gothelf and Reva Shwayder, who met in their mid-eighties.

Book News

This week, photographers Ira Goldberg and Jon Lybeck came to start photographing the writers of the book, “Don’t Write Me Off." We had such a good time, and the photos are spectacular. Ira and Jon are volunteering their time and copious expertise to make this book of resident stories so special. We want to give them a big, big, thank you! Also a big thank you to the volunteer writers, editors, coaches and champions of our book, without whom it would not be happening: Sy Manello, Alan Hitsky, Elizabeth Applebaum, Wendy Robins, Shelli Dorfman, Phyllis Schwartz, Hannah Moss, and Geri Margolis.

Volunteers

Volunteers make our JSL village a place where residents thrive. Just seeing new or familiar faces and knowing that the community cares injects energy into our community and all the people who are part of it. Many of the activities in the residences on both our West Bloomfield and Oak Park campuses are run and sometimes created by volunteers. Please visit jslmi.org/volunteer/ to see a list of volunteer opportunities. Or call or email me at 248 592-5062 / brobinson@jslmi.org.

JSL HAPPENINGS

STRONG FRIENDSHIPS ON A 'ROLL'

Hechtman Residents poke fun at a crazy national holiday - 'National Toilet Paper Day.

HIGH HOLIDAY

'DUCK HUNT'

Did you know that ducks symbolize prosperity, laughter, happiness, and good luck? For this reason, in the weeks leading up to Rosh Hashanah, Oak Park residents are scavenging for little plastic versions of our feathered friends across the common areas on campus. Each week, multiple little ducks are being hidden around the Oak Park Campus in areas that will help our older adults prosper in all areas of their lives in the new year. Rosh Hashanah is a special time for setting goals and reflecting on how many of our goals from last year have been achieved. JSL staff's goal is always to help our residents grow in mental, physical, social, emotional health, and their spirituality in Hebrew Year 5784. Wishing all members of our community a Sweet and Happy New Year!

BOOKMARK ART

Hechtman residents Dale (left) and Mike (right) painted watercolor bookmarks with RSC, Sarah Pappas, in the Eli A. Scherr Coffee Café.

WEEKLY RECIPE

Classic Kugel for Rosh Hashanah

A classic kugel recipe, just the right amount of dense and richness, with a sprinkling of raisins and a slightly 'secret' ingredient.

An Airplane's Take Off

It is impossible to achieve true upward movement without some kind of opposition. Just as air pressure creates a stronger upward movement than that which could be obtained by flotation, so too, for a person to transcend the materialism of the world and achieve a heightened closeness to G‑d. It is not enough to involve the good inclination alone. It is specifically through the opposition of the negative inclination, and the extra drive one exerts to overcome it, that one attains a more powerful “lift,” and hence greater heights.

More than half of the residents who live in our JSL communities are considered low income or indigent. Your philanthropic support is essential to maintaining programs and services to help these older adults age with dignity and with a better quality of life. In addition, your gifts could significantly support the shortfall in the cost of pharmacy bills which are so vital to the residents’ wellness. We are so grateful for your generous gifts to Jewish Senior Life.
