Issue 40 | September 2022

Along about seven miles of Route 7, we're adding a third lane and shared-use paths in each direction, building a pedestrian underpass to access Colvin Run Mill Park, replacing and raising the bridge over Difficult Run, and making many intersection, bicycle and pedestrian improvements. Learn more.

Construction Updates

In August, crews continued construction activities along the corridor:

Area 1: Reston Avenue to Colvin Forest Drive (Except Baron Cameron Avenue Intersection)

  • Placed cement-treated aggregate, installed underdrain, constructed curb and gutter, and paved along westbound Route 7 between Colvin Forest Drive and Baron Cameron Avenue in preparation for upcoming traffic shift to Stage 3B.
  • Finished stone and asphalt placement for the shared use paths along eastbound and westbound Route 7 between Delta Glen Court/Colvin Run Road (west) and Colvin Forest Drive.

Area 2: Baron Cameron Intersection

  • Completed intermediate asphalt placement for Stage 2C and continued intersection reconstruction work.

Area 3: Difficult Run Area (Colvin Forest Drive to Faulkner Drive)

  • Completed Stage 3A traffic shifts for eastbound and westbound Route 7 onto the new Difficult Run Bridge.
  • Started removal of the remaining existing Difficult Run bridge.
  • Began storm sewer installation between the new pedestrian underpass at Colvin Run Mill Park and Difficult Run.

Area 4: Faulkner Drive to Jarrett Valley Drive

  • Started drilling for noise barrier foundations along westbound Route 7 on the east and west sides of Forestville Drive.
  • Began noise barrier post installation along eastbound Route 7 between Old Ash Grove and Jarrett Valley Drive.
  • Installed retaining and noise barrier panels along eastbound Route 7 between Serenity Woods Lane and Middleton Ridge Road.
  • Continued storm sewer installation between Newcombs Farm Road and Beulah Road.
  • Started grading, placement of cement-treated aggregate, and base asphalt placement along eastbound Route 7 between Middleton Ridge Road and Beulah Road.
  • Continued storm sewer installation between Wolftrap Run Road and Lewinsville Road.
  • Opened the new Lewinsville Road intersection, including the displaced left turn from eastbound Route 7 to Lewinsville Road, in an interim configuration. Improvements in this area are ongoing while crews complete the work for the opening of the permanent intersection configuration.

Third-party utility design and relocation activities are also ongoing.
