Reciprocal membership
As a member of one senior college, you can sign up for online classes at other senior colleges. And, sometimes activities only require a small fee while other offerings are entirely free to MSCN members! You do not pay membership fees at other colleges, just the class fee!

The winter Brown Bag Series samples Midcoast Community Institutions - join us for 4 sessions held on four consecutive Mondays from 12:00–1:00 on Zoom, You'll meet leaders of major organizations in the Midcoast that represent marine biology, theater, horticulture, and Damariscotta's award-winning Skidompha Library. The speakers will discuss their projects, challenges, connection to the community, and how we as "Lifelong Learners" can be engaged and involved.

Suicide can be prevented.
Talk Saves Lives is a community-based introduction to suicide prevention. It covers the general scope of suicide, the research on prevention, and what people can do to prevent suicide. If you have lost a loved one to suicide or know someone who is struggling or are struggling yourself, this program will offer opportunities for questions. It is not a counseling session but an opportunity to learn more about this topic to stop the stigma of suicide. FMI, please visit AFSP.org.

The Future of Shellfish in the Gulf of Maine:
A Conversation with the Downeast Institute’s Dr. Brian Beal

Sunrise Senior College invites you to join a discussion with Dr. Brian Beal of the Downeast Institute on the future of shellfish in the waters off of Washington County. Here is your best opportunity to understand how warming waters, invasive species and new fishing technologies are changing the way we harvest the rich resources of the Gulf of Maine. You will also have the chance to ask questions of one of the country’s foremost experts on marine biology. Dr. Beal’s discussion will cover his ongoing research at the Downeast Institute, the impacts he is seeing on shellfish stocks, and his predictions on future lobster, clam, mussel and scallop catches. He will first give a brief presentation, and then answer questions from Sunrise Senior College board member Stephen Kelly, a former journalist and diplomat who for the past decade has been affiliated with Duke University. The final segment will be open to questions from the public.
Likely topics include whether lobster catches are likely to shrink, how the green crab has impacted mussel stocks, and what new techniques in clam culture are on the horizon. This discussion should interest those who make a living on the water, as well as those individuals who love Maine and have a deep interest in the future health of its coast.
Dr. Beal, Director of the Marine Science Field Station at the University of Maine at Machias, is a Jonesport native who received his undergraduate degree from UMM, and graduate degrees from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and the University of Maine, Orono. In 2002, he became the youngest full professor in UMM’s history.

Just sign up for your online class and click on a link to join at the appointed hour. Make yourself a nice hot drink and sit down with your fellow lifelong learners from across the state.
Advantages to Zoom? - Yes, there are some!
We know that everyone wants to get back to meeting in person as soon as they feel safe. In the meantime, consider taking an online class or sitting in on a lunchtime lecture. We have heard that people have found some advantages to online courses! On Zoom, you can see everyone's face (not the back of their heads), you can hear clearly, and before you know it, you forget all about the technology and the geographical distance separating you from each other.

Interview with Kerri Arsenault

Arsenault is a book critic, teacher, contributing editor at Orion magazine, an associate of the Mahindra Humanities Center at Harvard, and the author of the best-selling book, Mill Town: Reckoning with What Remains, which won the Rachel Carson Environment Book Award from the Society of Environmental Journalists and the Maine Literary Award for nonfiction. Mill Town was also a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Leonard Prize, the New England Society Book Award, the New England Independent Booksellers Association nonfiction prize, and the Connecticut Book Awards. Her work has appeared in Freeman’s, the Boston Globe, Down East, the Paris Review, the New York Review of Books, and the Washington Post. She has also served on the National Book Critics Circle board for four years and has held 86 jobs.
Arsenault received an MFA in nonfiction from the New School and studied in the Master Programme in communication for development at Malmö University, Sweden, and is the nonfiction editor at the Franco-American journal, Résonance. She is also a member of the following organizations: PEN America, Maine Writers & Publishers Alliance, National Book Critics Circle, Society of Environmental Journalists.
About the event:
The event will center around an interview with Arsenault, about her book Mill Town, facilitated by a board member of the Franco-American Collection. The talk will then open for a Q&A with the Zoom audience through both the Chat function and by live audio. The event will be recorded.

Even in the darkest times during the current pandemic, there is joy in life through creativity in the new year!!!.
Here is a new book with visual beauty which the Brunswick artist, Mary Alice Treworgy, has captured in her paintings of Maine and Monhegan Island. The book is written by Carl Little, a highly respected Maine journalist and author of many art books, including a major biography of Dahlov Ipcar. The writing style of Carl Little matches the straightforward painting style of the artist. There are no frills in expressing the artist’s precise realistic interpretations of Maine. Carl Little in his writing touches the heart of Maine with clarity and dignity in providing the background information on the artist and her work. He explains that Mary Alice Treworgy’s love of Monhegan Island is like many artists who have come to love Maine’s harbors, headlands, and stark beauty, and like many artists, Monhegan Island became Mary Alice Treworgy’s muse.
Treworgy said about Monhegan,” I feel safe here. It is a very quiet place and everywhere I look I like what I see. It’s authentic, without pretense.”
Mary Alice Treworgy’s work is authentic, straightforward, and realistic. Some of her work can be compared to Edward Hopper because of its straight lines and haunting loneliness. Some of her work can be compared to Thomas Crotty because of its precise flat use of perspective. All her work is original in simplifying geometric shapes of the basic structures found in Maine.
Treworgy’s work makes us look at everyday objects found in Maine, and discover new beauty in its architecture, harbors, and boats on land waiting to be launched, as seen in the work “Fish Beach”, oil on canvas created in 1991. Two other outstanding works which can be seen in the book are “Monhegan From Manana", oil on linen, created in 1999, and “Frankie Odom’s Place” created in 2000. In a stark, flat, geometric work titled “Bath, Maine”, oil on linen, created in 1995, the artist captures a crane operated by BIW and shows another part of Maine that is industrialized.
The whole book is amazing because it brings attention to the public of an important artist from Brunswick, Maine who is not well known, but certainly is gifted. If you are looking for a new discovery this year in creativity, beyond the statistics of the pandemic, look for Mary Alice Treworgy’s work in this book. It will bring to you creative insight and peace of mind.
None of the works are angry. All of the works offer quiet contentment and an appreciation of everyday sights that sometimes we take for granted.
Treworgy was born in Baltimore in 1936 as May Alice Hoffman. As a child, she lived in an 1820 farmhouse on Long Island, New York which she loved. However, ten years later after a divorce in the family, Mary moved with her mother to West Springfield, Massachusetts. In 1957 Mary attended the Massachusetts College of Art. One of her teachers there was Beverly Hallam who became a well-known Maine artist years later.
This book is an unusually beautiful art book because of its many-colored plates and its details in fine writing. It includes sketches in the back of the book on two pages with interesting notes. In addition, it has a list of all exhibitions, public collections, corporate collections, and bibliography for further reading.
In conclusion. this is an outstanding book for those who are interested in Maine artists and who collect books of beauty about them. It is a perfect book for libraries who would like to expand their art book departments making an important contemporary art book available to the public to enjoy. I recommend it highly.
