Sunday Series this Weekend:

Booth Memorial Hospital History

judical gavel.jpg

D10 Como Park's 2022 Sunday Series wraps up this Sunday, March 27, 1-2:30pm on Zoom. We're excited to welcome Dr. Kim Heikkila, author of Booth Girls, who will share about the history of the Booth Memorial Hospital before 1973.

For 75 years, the Salvation Army operated a maternity home and hospital for unwed mothers in St. Paul, first on Jackson Street and then at 1471 Como Avenue. Booth Memorial Hospital housed thousands of young women who sought refuge – sometimes willingly, sometimes not — from the public censure that their status often elicited. Dr. Kim Heikkila’s mother was one of these women; she delivered her first daughter, Heikkila’s half-sister, at Booth in 1961, surrendered her for adoption, and kept the whole experience a secret for 33 years. In this presentation, Dr. Heikkila will explore the intersection of her mother’s story with the history of Booth Memorial Hospital and changing cultural views of single pregnancy. The presentation will conclude with a Q&A. The free presentation will be 1-2:30pm on Zoom.

May Como Community Blood Drive Reservations Open

D10 Como Park is again partnering with the American Red Cross and the Como Zoo & Conservatory to host community blood drives at the Zoo. Reservations are only available for the May 26 event at this time.

Upcoming Drive Dates:

With the pandemic lingering and so many still working from home, workplace blood drives have all but vanished, affecting the Red Cross’ reserve levels. Community blood drives are the perfect opportunity to take a break from the home office or start a trip to the zoo!

We're still looking for a couple check-in table volunteers for the Noon to 3pm shift at the August 2 drive. It’s light work and a great way to connect with a neighbor. If you’re interested in volunteering, you can reach out to district10@district10comopark.org.

Coffee Coming to Como

It's starting to feel like it's really going to happen, gourmet coffee in D10!

You may have noticed a new sign along Dale this week, Abogados Cafe at 1053 Dale St. is already taking online orders for coffee and merchandise. They're hoping to open their storefront for to-go coffee in the next couple months when remodeling is complete.

The proprietors, husband and wife Inti & Ofelia, operate the existing Ceiba Fôrte Law Firm in the upper level of the building and are excited to finally move forward with this new endeavor that further showcases their Honduran heritage.

1-4 Unit Housing Study Survey Closes on March 28

The City's Planning and Economic Development (PED) department study is evaluating additional zoning flexibility to support greater housing diversity across the city. This includes looking at the potential to allow duplexes, triplexes, and fourplexes in more places as well as more types of single-family homes, such as cluster developments, townhomes, and accessory dwelling units (ADUs).

This is your chance to provide input on housing types, where they should be allowed, and possible policy changes to allow more housing. They are hoping to hear from as many residents and stakeholders as possible as part of the community engagement phase of the project.

Learn more about the study

Visit the engagement website for information sheets on neighborhood-scale housing, how the City can add more housing, and housing development considerations. Visit the project website for project background, FAQs, and official memos on the study.

Questions?

Contact 1to4HousingStudy@ci.stpaul.mn.us or City Planner Emma Siegworth at 651-266-6657 with any follow-up questions.

D10 Como Park co-hosted an engagement session with PED and neighboring district councils on February 10. You can view the recording of that session here on the D10 website.
