Featured Folklore - Group Rancho Folclórico de Nossa Senhora de Fatima
“A Portuguese folklore dance group, their vision is to express the traditions, culture and language of Portugal through music and dance. This group provides an outlet for individuals who are seeking acceptance and knowledge about the Portuguese culture.”
This Portuguese folk dancing group is from Cumberland, RI.

Traditions / Customs
Feast of the Blessed Sacrament
“Founded in 1915 by four Madeiran immigrant men who wanted to recreate the religious festivals that were so common in the villages of their home island and to commemorate their safe passage to these American shores, this traditional mid-summer gathering for family and friends has become the Largest Portuguese Feast in the World and the largest ethnic festival in New England. The Feast attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors from around the globe.
Throughout its history, men of Madeiran heritage and their families have made the feast possible by their generous contributions of time and labor. Each year at the conclusion of the feast, the Club Madeirense S.S. Sacramento selects a committee of festeiros to organize the next year's event.”

Featured Fado Singer – Angela Brito
“Angela was born in November of 1979 to Manuel and Maria Brito. Born & raised in San Pablo, California, Angela’s love of music began blossoming at a very young age. Her father, from São Bras de Álportel, in the region of Algarve, played the Guitarra Portuguesa and shared his passion for Fado with her. Angela has fond memories of hearing the crisp sound of the Guitarra Portuguesa as she watched her father’s fingers dancing along its strings. He and her mother, originally from the city of Ílhavo, in the Beira Litoral region of Portugal, were actively involved in many Portuguese organizations. They made it a priority to immerse Angela and her brother, Paulo, in all of the rich traditions that they were raised with.”

“After earning undergraduate and graduate degrees at California College of Arts and Crafts (now California College of the Arts), Linhares began his career as a practicing artist, but took on curatorial and faculty duties at various institutions, including the San Francisco Art Institute and Mills College. He has worked for OMCA since 1990.”

In an article by Henrique Mano titled: “CONFINATION WAKE UP ENTERPRISE (AND CREATIVE) SPIRIT OF YOUNG LUSO-AMERICANA IN NEW YORK,” it states: “Long Island's Luso-American Eloise Portal preferred to occupy time otherwise... ′′ I was bored having to stay at home in confinement with nothing to do when I remembered to create Simple Creations, where I could give wings to my creativity ", Eloise Portal account, in statements made to the LUSO-AMERICAN newspaper. The result is a collection of clothes and props for all ages, despite moulding more to the age range of the creator herself; they are t-shirts, shirts, sweaters, dresses and masks of all colors.”

Featured Author – Frank Gaspar
“Frank X. Gaspar was born and raised in the old Portuguese West End of Provincetown, Massachusetts. A graduate of the MFA program in writing at the University of California, Irvine, he is the author of five collections of poetry and two novels. Among his many awards are the Morse, Anhinga, and Brittingham Prizes for poetry, multiple inclusions in Best American Poetry, four Pushcart Prizes, a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in Literature, and a California Arts Council Fellowship in poetry. He was also a John Atherton Fellow at Bread Loaf, and a Walter Dakin Fellow at Sewanee. His debut novel, Leaving Pico was a Barnes and Noble Discovery Prize winner, a recipient of the California Book Award for First Fiction and a New York Times Notable Book (paperback edition). His second novel Stealing Fatima was a MassBook of the Year in Fiction (Massachusetts Foundation for the Book).”

“Dr. Perry’s studies are focused on the mechanism of formation and physiological consequences of the cytopathology of Alzheimer disease. The lab has shown that oxidative damage is the initial cytopathology in Alzheimer disease. They are working to determine the sequence of events leading to neuronal oxidative damage and the source of the increased oxygen radicals.”

Featured Actor – Joe DeRita
“Joe DeRita (July 12, 1909 – July 3, 1993), born Joseph Wardell, was an American comedian who is best known as Curly-Joe DeRita, the "sixth" member of the Three Stooges. DeRita was born into a show-business family in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Wardell's father was a stage technician, his mother a professional stage dancer, and the three often acted on stage together from his early childhood. Taking his mother's maiden name, DeRita (Portuguese), the actor joined the burlesque circuit during the 1920s, gaining fame as a comedian. During World War II, DeRita joined the USO, performing through Britain and France with such celebrities as Bing Crosby and Randolph Scott.”

In addition, PALCUS is a member-driven non-profit organization that depends on membership dues and fundraising events to fund its operations. Members of the all-volunteer board of directors donate their time and personal funds for travel, lodging and tickets to attend networking events and planning sessions so our administrative costs are relatively low but nonetheless critical to doing business on a daily basis.

PALCUS Mission
In order to create a singular voice to advocate for the Portuguese-American and Luso-American communities at large, the Portuguese-American Leadership Council of the United States Inc. (PALCUS) was founded in 1991 as a non-partisan, non-profit, organization headquartered in Washington, D.C.
The PALCUS mission is to address domestic and international concerns of the Portuguese-American Community.
The Council conducts an expanding program of educational and public affairs activities on issues of interest to the Portuguese-American community and of salience to the Luso-American Relationship.
PALCUS is committed to serving the community through increasingly active government relations efforts, the promotion of a greater awareness of ethnic accomplishments and encouraging stronger ties between Portugal and the United States. In this role PALCUS advances the community professionally, politically and culturally while working to ensure that issues directly affecting our community are addressed through our network of government and community leaders.
PALCUS is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization under the IRS tax code and incorporated under the laws of the District of Columbia. Donations are tax deductible to extent allowed by law and will be acknowledged.
