DELAWARE GREENWAYS NEWS

Georgetown-Lewes Trail User Survey Report Completed

Late last summer, into early fall, Delaware Greenways conducted a user survey of the Georgetown-Lewes Trail. Our purpose was to gather information to understand when, who, how and why people use this trail in Sussex County. We also asked trail users their favorite aspects of the trail, and how their trail experience could be improved. 804 surveys were collected! Our gratitude to each person who took the time to provide us with their responses, and to our volunteers who helped collect them!

Our goal, through this data collection, was to identify specific barriers that may keep this popular trail from providing an enjoyable, safe experience for all ages and abilities.

The survey data has been compiled, and we are excited to share that information with you! Working collaboratively with others, we look forward to implementing programs to reduce barriers uncovered.

Support Delaware Greenways

As a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, Delaware Greenways relies on contributions from individuals and businesses to move trail and byway projects forward. When our resources are limited, we're limited in what we can accomplish. It's as simple as that.

Please ask yourself, "Are outdoor connections that have been proven to improve my mental and physical health, important to me?". If the answer is yes, we ask that you contribute what you can toward our work. Help advance access to Delaware's outdoors!

Mill Road Access Trail

When determining what projects to advocate for, Delaware Greenways has committed to creating and supporting projects that will enrich the diverse communities that we seek to serve.

Over the past year, we have been advocating for both the short-term improvements of the Mill Road access trail in Brandywine Park in the City of Wilmington, and the creation of a trail that provides access for everyone. In a letter to Mayor Purzycki in May, we stated how important these safety and trail access projects are to those who live, work or travel in this section of the City.

We're pleased to say that, late last month, the City started work on restoring the Mill Road access trail! The initial before and after photos of the first day of work are shown at right. We'll be sure to inform you of future improvements. Read our letter to the Mayor.

Bancroft Bridge Update

While we can't make your day by announcing the Bancroft Pedestrian Bridge in Alapocas Run State Park will open sooner than the projected April 2025 date, we can share that details of the project are being defined, including a preliminary design of the replacement bridge, so that it can then be bid on, and awarded.

We're glad to be a part of this process, as we're as anxious as you are to see this Northern Delaware Greenway Trail connector re-open!

In the not-too-distant future, you'll be invited to a Public Workshop to view and comment on the proposed design of the bridge. Be sure to stay tuned here or on our social media pages for that meeting announcement!

Bridge's projected Construction Phase start date is August 2024.
