Addressing Trauma

The US Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration says that at least two-thirds of children experience a traumatic event by the time they are 16. To help primary care providers (PCPs) help their young patients who experience traumatic stress, we launched a new course last week, Addressing Trauma in Pediatric Primary Care.

According to Brooks Keeshin, MD, one of the developers of the course, most children who undergo traumatic experiences cope well enough with appropriate support from their families. Some need just a little extra support, perhaps from their PCP or another caring professional.

A few suffer traumatic stress that seriously affects their psychological well-being and their ability to function well in school, at home, and with friends.

Addressing Trauma in Pediatric Primary Care helps PCPs discern how much help each child needs and gives them the tools to provide that help. The emphasis is on evidence-based treatments including trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy. Dr. Keeshin outlined the basics in our most recent blog, Treating Pediatric Trauma.

We were heartened by the response to the inaugural session of Addressing Trauma in Pediatric Primary Care. If you follow us on social media, you'll be among the first to know when we offer it again!

A Note from our CEO

Lisa Hunter Romanelli, PhD

CEO, The REACH Institute

The US Preventive Services Task Force just finalized its recommendation that all children aged 8 to 18 be screened for anxiety in primary care. The task force also recently issued draft guidelines recommending screening for all adults up to age 65.

Anxiety and other mental health disorders are reaching epidemic proportions, fueled by a host of causes. Screening is a vital first step, but it's only a start. Primary care providers (PCPs) are understandably reluctant to screen for disorders they are not prepared to treat.

The REACH courses Patient-Centered Mental Health in Pediatric Primary Care and Adult Behavioral Health in Primary Care bridge the gap between screening recommendations and real relief for patients who suffer from anxiety disorders. By equipping PCPs to diagnose and treat anxiety, depression, and ADHD, we are doing our part to address today's mental health crisis.

Thank you for being our partner in this vital work!
