Cadet Programs Dole Out 90+ Academic, Flight Scholarships Worth Over $155K |

Nearly 100 Civil Air Patrol cadets from 35 wings in all eight regions are receiving academic and flight scholarships worth a combined total of $155,500 in 2021, Cadet Programs has announced.
Twenty more cadets were recommended for acceptance to the U.S. Air Force Preparatory School in Colorado Springs.
In all, 61 academic scholarships account for $120,500 of the total amount, with 32 flight scholarships accounting for the remaining $35,000.
“You had tough competition, and you should be proud of your selection,” Maj. Gen. Mark Smith, CAP’s national commander and CEO, said in a congratulatory message prepared for the scholarship recipients.

Meet CAP's CyberPatriot XIII Finalists |
|
Cadet teams from the California, Colorado and North Carolina wings will compete online March 19-21 in the All Service Division finals of the Air Force Association’s CyberPatriot XIII National Youth Cyber Defense Competition.
The team from the California Wing’s Fullerton Composite Squadron 56 (top photo) also reached the finals in 2018 and 2019.
The Colorado Wing’s Air Academy Cadet Squadron (middle photo) is making the squadron's first finals appearance since CyberPatriot III 10 years ago.
The team from the North Carolina Wing's Union County Composite Squadron (bottom photo) rounds out the CAP contingent as the wildcard entry in the 13-team field.
The teams will square off remotely against each other and the other finalists in the All Service Division —Junior ROTC teams from each of the military services and the Naval Sea Cadet Corps.
CAP teams won the overall All Service Division championship in 2011, 2012 and 2017.

History Month Spotlight
For Women's History Month, CAP.news profiles Col. Andrea Van Buren, who became the Southeast Region's first female commander in August 2019 after serving as Georgia Wing commander.
Van Buren's advice to cadets, senior members and nonmembers alike: “Work hard to be the best at everything you do. Never stop. Never settle. ‘No’ is the beginning of a negotiation.
“You’re going to hit a lot of roadblocks and negativity, and you have to keep going.”
Overall, she added, “be the one. It takes one action, one thought, one word, to make a difference in someone’s life.”

NESA-MTT Graduates 71 SW Region ICs, IMTs |
|
In another National Emergency Services Academy-Mobile Training Team first, 71 incident commanders and incident management team members from across the Southwest Region graduated from the first-ever delivery of an Incident Command System 300 Refresher course.
Published specifically for CAP, the course was packaged with course review material from two recently released Federal Emergency Management Agency Independent Study online curricula and a six-hour synchronous classroom delivery. Pre- and post-course testing first assessed students' knowledge, later evaluate the instruction's effectiveness, and finally measured participants' learning level.
After a thorough review of the course post-test results, it will be made available to all CAP regions. John Desmarais, CAP's director of operations, said, “This course has been a long time in coming and will assist in reinforcing CAP's Command & Control/IMT operations and compliance with national incident management standards.”

75th Cadet Earns 'Wings' Through CAP Program |
|
CAP's Cadet Wings program reached a milestone March 12 when its 75th cadet earned his Federal Aviation Administration private pilot certificate. Cadet Maj. Parker Woods (above) of the Illinois Wing's Lewis Composite Squadron received his certificate from FAA examiner Gail Sue Lapook.
Now in its second year, Cadet Wings has 68 pilot candidates still enrolled. About one-third are close to receiving their certificates.

Deadline for CEO Applications is April 1
April 1 is the deadline for applications for the CAP Chief Executive Officer and National Commander vacancy created when Maj. Gen. Mark Smith's four-year term ends in August.
National Commanders normally serve three-year terms, but Smith was granted an extension by CAP's Board of Governors.
CAP members may nominate themselves to fill this position.
Minimum requirements are:
- Be a CAP member in good standing.
- Have a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
- Have completed Level V of the CAP Education and Training Program.
- Have served as a CAP wing commander who completed their term of office other than due to a removal for cause.

A publication of CAP's National History Program, the journal features articles about the organization's history-makers, the nation’s early experiences with powered flight and the pioneers who championed it over the years, civilian and military aviation, and CAP’s impact as a force multiplier for the U.S. Air Force.
The current issue includes an article on Col. Charles Compton, one of the last surviving CAP subchasers until his death in 2020 at age 104.
