Thursday, August 10, 2023 - Journey of the Cross | |
Dear Friends in Christ,
Some have noticed a new cross behind the altar in our chapel. Our church acquired this cross from St. James Episcopal which was located across the highway from Marquette University, next to "the big red church" that you see when driving south on I-43. St. James was founded in 1850, and the English Gothic Revival style church was built in 1867. Unfortunately, the congregation had dwindled just as massive building renovations were needed and the whole building was sold in 2017. It is now an event space.
Before the final closing, St. James invited other churches to come take a look at some of their sacred artifacts with the hope that these objects which had been in the presence of people's prayers for 150 years, might in some small way carry the legacy of the parish forward. Recently, Mary Jones and Bridget Eliot, altar guild co-chairs, polished the cross, and we discovered that its gold patina is an almost perfect match to the gold in the painting of mother and child behind the cross.
Meanwhile, the church we have been helping construct in Tanzania needed an altar cross, so that we are able to give just as we have received. Fr. Oswald travels back to Tanzania next week and the cross will go with him. It will serve as a concrete symbol of our prayers for this particular community and the worldwide Anglican communion in all it's diverse forms.
With Gratitude and Hope,
Seth+

Week 11: Summer Creation Care:
Climate Justice as Peace
12 weeks of Questions to Ponder and Act Upon
Climate change is often called a “threat multiplier”. While people and countries have always fought over land and water, climate change will make natural resources even scarcer resulting in more conflicts. Through our active, mutual participation in the “ministry of reconciliation,” as apostle Paul describes, we have a rich opportunity to work toward realizing climate justice and peace. In the process of participating in this ministry of reconciliation and peace, we recognize we too are being transformed into the likeness of Christ. We recognize that commitment to climate discipleship in community will involve creativity, talent, and compassionate sacrifice.
Questions to ponder and act upon:
1 Have you thought of climate change as a peace issue before? Why or why not?
2 How can we partner in ways that honor those who are affected?
