Carleton Washburne
Monday Memo
January 4, 2021

Washburne Families,

We hope everyone enjoyed the holidays and had a safe and restful break with family over the past two weeks. We are looking forward to getting 2021 off to a great start at Washburne, and are excited to welcome students back virtually on Tuesday.

As a reminder, Washburne students will continue to follow their hybrid schedule for the next two weeks with one exception;
All students will start the day at 8:30 AM for advisory.
  • Attendance for all students will be taken each morning during advisory.
  • AM and PM students begin the day at 8:30am with Advisory.
  • AM students will continue with their block classes in the morning following advisory.  They will have their related studies courses in the afternoon beginning at 12:55 PM.
  • PM students will have their related studies courses in the morning starting at 8:55 AM.  They will have their block classes in the afternoon starting at 12:50 PM.
We are combining the advisories during the two-week remote period to allow for students to communicate, collaborate, and build relationships with their AM or PM advisory counterparts.

Schoology will be used to share information with students to help minimize the amount of emails parents receive daily. Please remember that parents can access Schoology using their parent account via the information that was sent home at the beginning of the school year. Please reach out to your teacher if you do not know how to access.

We look forward to returning to our in person hybrid model after this 2 week adaptive pause and thank you in advance for your support during this brief period of at home learning.

Take care and be well,

Dr. Andrew Fenton                 Ben Horwitz
Principal                                   Assistant Principal

Student Absences
During remote learning, parents or guardians must still contact the school if a student will be absent from any classes.  All school  absence reporting links can be found on the district website-  https://www.winnetka36.org/nurses/absence.

Attendance is monitored for both core classes and related studies.

Common Recommendation Form
As a reminder, if you are applying to other schools there is a common Winnetka Teacher feedback form that parents need to sign and return the first page to Sharon Callahan ([email protected]) in the Washburne Office to begin this process. You can then send the Common Teacher Feedback Form, Linked Here, to each teacher.

After School Support Club
The Student Help Center will continue to run during our remote learning period Tuesday through Friday.  Washburne teachers are available after school from 3:45-4:30 PM to provide help to students and answer questions. This service is available to all students and does not require any fee to participate.
  • Teachers are available from 3:45-4:30 Tuesday through Friday.
  • At least one math and one humanities teacher is available each day.
  • Students may receive help from any teacher.
  • Students participate through Zoom. Teachers use breakout rooms to provide help for students.
  • In order to access the Zoom, we have created a Student Help Center group in Schoology.  All students can access the Schoology page by clicking on "Groups."
DISTRICT NEWS

January 2021 Schedule
The post-winter break schedule is as follows:
  • Monday, January 4 - Remote Planning Day (non-student attendance day)
  • Tuesday, January 5 - Friday, January 8 - K-8 Remote Learning
  • Monday, January 11 - AM Remote Learning (AM/PM pods will merge), PM Teacher In-Service (non-student attendance)
  • Tuesday, January 12 - Friday, January 15 - Remote Learning
  • Monday, January 18 - NO SCHOOL (MLK Day)
  • Tuesday, January 19 - Return to Hybrid In-Person model
To access the detailed information previously shared by the Department of Innovation, Teaching and Learning and Department of Student Services to prepare for remote learning,  please click here.

The best way to return to campus safely after break is to have families and staff limit exposure to others and return home no later than January 3 in an effort to prevent the return of the virus on our campuses.  The 2-week remote learning transition plan is intended to afford the recommended 14-day quarantine for those who travel or become close contacts.  This should not be viewed as a window of time to extend vacations.  If you do extend travel, there will not be capacity in our remote classrooms for temporary enrollment due to travel-based quarantine.  Parents will be responsible for supporting student learning while away on travel and any related quarantine Teachers have limited ability to assist students prior to and returning from vacations given the demands of the current context.

CrisisGo Resumes District-wide Starting January 5, 2021
We are asking all families to continue to complete Crisis Go during our remote learning schedule in January. Note that some of the questions may be different given the context of this time period. It is imperative that our school community participates so we can safely resume in-person learning on campus to the best of our ability on January 19, 2021.

An Update on Quarantine Guidance for Close Contacts/Travel
The Cook County Department of Public Health and Illinois Department of Public Health have released updated guidance in response to the recent Centers for Disease Control guidance revision.  For close contacts and travel, the 14-day quarantine is still highly recommended; however, the state and local health departments have advised the District that it is acceptable to follow the alternate quarantine timelines due to our effective mitigation efforts:
  • FOR CHILDREN & STAFF: 10-day quarantine (can return to school on 11th day) with no test and an absence of all symptoms during any day of the daily monitoring period.
  • FOR ADULTS (staff) ONLY:  7-day quarantine (allowing for a return to work/school on the 8th day) with a negative test taken AFTER the 5th day of exposure with an absence of all symptoms during any day of the daily monitoring period. This option is ONLY available to adult staff members and the Illinois Department of Public Health is ONLY recommending molecular (RT-PCR or NAAT) tests for release from quarantine.
The 10-day quarantine option will be an option for students and staff.  The 7-day quarantine + test option is ONLY available to staff per IDPH guidance.  PLEASE NOTE, THE GUIDANCE IS SUBJECT TO CHANGE AT ANY TIME.
