Mississippi Sippin
Thursdays in August | 5pm - 8pm
Relax outdoors along MMAM's Riverwalk on Thursdays this summer at Mississippi Sippin. Enjoy a curated selection of spirited and non-spirited beverages, and small plates outside along the Mississippi River. Then, venture into the galleries (open late until 8pm) to see how exhibiting artists are using water as inspiration for their work. Mississippi Sippin presents a casual opportunity to explore how many different art forms can be inspired by water.

Courtney Mattison: Visualizing Climate Change Through the Fragile Beauty of Marine Life

Join MMAM exhibiting artist and ocean advocate Courtney Mattison, for a virtual presentation about her intricate and large-scale ceramic sculptural work inspired by the plight of coral reefs. Her work visualizes the effects of carbon dioxide emissions, such as coral bleaching caused by warming waters, and ocean acidification. Courtney Mattison: Undercurrent is on view now through September 3. This is a hybrid of an in-person and virtual event. The artist, Courtney Mattison, will be streaming live virtually.

Don’t miss your chance to see two stunning exhibitions celebrating the theme of Fauna. Eclectic paper mâché sculptural works march through the gallery in Lix Sexton’s Out of Water. “...the lifelike wearable sculptures draw attention to a variety of beings that rely on aquatic ecosystems for survival.” (Colossal). Concurrently, ceramicist Courtney Mattison’s solo exhibition reminds us of the fragile beauty of living coral reefs. “Artist and ocean advocate Courtney Mattison wants to bring the beauty of the sea above the surface” (Minnesota Public Radio). Both exhibitions are on view at MMAM through September 3.

This dinner event celebrates the conclusion of Courtney Mattison: Undercurrent (on view through Sunday, September 3, 2023), and gives you a chance to meet the artist, dine on a 3-course sustainably harvested meal, inspired by the exhibition, and take a private tour with the curators.

August Community Reads Program
MMAM is proud to partner with the Winona Public Library and their August Community Reads Program.
| This August, join the Winona area community, Winona Public Library, and MMAM, as we read Aimee Nezhukumatathil’s New York Times bestselling memoir, World of Wonders. The book is a collection of essays about the natural world, and the way its inhabitants can teach, support, and inspire us. World of Wonders and its original illustrations by Fumi Nakamura are on exhibition currently at MMAM in Waking Worlds: Wondrous Reads for Curious Minds. | |

Activate Outside! Community Design with Chris Cornelius

| MMAM is poised to pursue some ambitious plans to rethink its six-acre campus plan over the next three to five years. On Seasonal Saturday, meet architect Chris Cornelius and share your thoughts about ways MMAM can use its outdoor spaces to be more inviting for everyone in our community, create a space that promotes a healthy lifestyle, and connects us more to the plants and animals all around us. | |

From Shipwreckt Books Publishing Company of Winona, MN, comes a beautiful new collection of flora-inspired poetry from artist and writer Mara Adamitz Scrupe. MMAM hosted a celebration and reading of this new release mid-July with guests leaving moved, inspired, and eager to dive into the rest of Mara’s prose. Reap: a flora is now available in the MMAM SHOPPE. | |
