August 2023
Dear Book Lovers and Friends,

We hope this Newsletter finds you well and that you are having a wonderful summer. It has been a rainy one here in the Northshire, and our thoughts are with all those who have been badly affected by the recent flooding. Our Manchester store will continue to Round-Up for the Stratton Foundation in August, as they are providing critical relief aid to those members of our community in need.

We are delighted to announce that our Saratoga Springs store is celebrating its 10 year anniversary on Aug 4th! This milestone would not have been possible without the unwavering support we get from all of you, our cherished customers and book enthusiasts. Thank you!

To commemorate this special occasion, we will have a ribbon cutting ceremony at 10am and we will be hosting a live broadcast at the Saratoga store with WEQX (102.7), one of our favorite local radio stations from 3pm-5pm. Please stop by the store or tune into WEQX on August 4th if you can! We are excited to share this occasion with all of you, whether in person or over the air!

We have also launched a partnership with the WEQX team in our vinyl sections at both stores. We now have WEQX DJ Recommendations for you to explore. Whether you're a music aficionado or just starting to delve into vinyl records, these curated picks are sure to elevate your listening experience.

As part of our commitment to fostering a thriving literary community, we continue to host engaging adult and childrens' events at both stores. August will see the likes of Deborah Roberts in Saratoga and Andre Dubus III in Manchester, and we will be launching a summer series in Manchester, LTStorytime with readers from Long Trail School

We hope to see you in the store! Our team is always ready to assist you in curating your next literary adventure, or in helping you find just the right gift for a special occasion. Please also remember that we are here for you online as well. For those who are not local, you can still “shop local” at www.northshire.com. We appreciate your support! And please follow us online @northshirebooks. We will have some exciting updates for you between now and the end of the year!

Thank you, and happy reading!

Best Wishes,
Cathleen, Nicole & Ashley

Featured Release

From James McBride, author of the bestselling Oprah’s Book Club pick Deacon King Kong and the National Book Award–winning The Good Lord Bird, a novel about small-town secrets and the people who keep them.

"It isn't as if Chicken Hill has seen better days. There never had been better days. It was the name given to a section of Pottstown, Pennsylvania, where immigrant Jewish and African American people lived side by side. If coexistence was not always harmonious, it frequently displayed a resigned desire on the part of the inhabitants to make the best of it. The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store was the hub of the district and Chona Ludlow was its heart. The store never made a dime, but the goodwill that Chona extended to everyone who walked through the door was beyond price. When she provides a refuge for a deaf Black boy being hunted by white authorities, it sets off a chain of events that threatens the tenuous racial accord and changes Chicken Hill forever. This wonderful novel, by the author of Deacon King Kong, is as notable for its smart and stylish prose as it is for its ability to enfold the reader into a warm and enveloping story. I doubt if I'll read a better book this year." — reviewed by Alden Graves

Pre-order Highlight

A Northshire Staff Pick several times over and a sweeping novel about a single house in the woods of New England, told through the lives of those who inhabit it across the centuries—a daring, moving tale of memory and fate from the Pulitzer Prize finalist and author of The Piano Tuner and The Winter Soldier.

“A monumental achievement of polyphony and humanity . . . I loved it.” —Maggie O’Farrell, author of Hamnet

"It is a novel about a house in western Massachusetts. And a piece of land. It's about the people who inhabit the house across many generations and hundreds of years. The natural history of the area is meticulously explored. There are murders. Ghosts. The way Mason has woven countless threads together as the stories progress and the characters accumulate nearly defies belief. This book is astonishingly good. The first book I have read in years that I could have turned the last page and proceeded back to page one." — reviewed by Stan Hynds

"A kaleidoscopic epic through space and time, place and mind. North Woods is a sweeping journey exploring the life-threads that weave the tapestry of not only our lives, but those who come before and after our brief time on Earth. Daniel Mason has written an instant classic. Bury me in this book." — reviewed by Chris Linendoll
