In Spring 2022, Dr. Jessica Delgado will teach History 8100: Seminar in Latin American History, a research and writing seminar focused on individual projects.
Course description:
In spite of the title, this course is not just for Latin Americanists! This course is for all graduate students interested in exploring the ways that the following studies may enrich their own research: colonial and modern Latin America; Latinx communities in the diaspora; colonial and modern borderlands histories; hemispheric approaches to the history of the Americas; and the intersecting histories of race, gender, sexuality, and religion in the Americas, as viewed from the south. Graduate students whose geographical focus lies anywhere in the Americas, or whose interests include the history of transatlantic connections that involve the Spanish Empire, or whose thematic areas of inquiry include histories of race, religion, gender, and sexuality are all likely to find this course useful. By reading a few select shared texts, and primarily through collaboration with their colleagues, Latin Americanists as well as graduate students in other fields will expand their capacity to think comparatively and gain experience drawing inspiration and critical tools from historiographical traditions beyond their primary fields.
