FLOWER POWER
Happily we can compel the new season to appear no matter the weather. All you need is a branch from a flowering shrub or tree, a vase of water and scissors. Shear science. This is a good way to stem the tide of cabin fever, by fooling tomorrow’s flowers into blossoming today.
It seems like only yesterday, that we were sharing images of winter with you… but now, enough of that!

Spring is here, which in New Hampshire means mud and temps still down in the 30’s or 40’s overnight… but, as every year, a growing relief which is welcome almost beyond words.

Given the unique events of the past winter/year, this particular spring has brought a sense of release, joy and sweet anticipation far exceeding the usual.
OUT AND ABOUT
When the calendar turns to spring, thoughts turn to… birds & bears, woodland walks and salamanders.

Just a reminder… Black Bears are emerging from their winter dens and are very hungry! This is the time to take down your bird feeders.
How did the wood frog cross the road?

CUE THE MUSIC
In a delightful video, “Salut Salon” performs a unique arrangement of Vivaldi’s “Storm”, Mozart’s “Sonata in C” and Kurt Weill’s “Mack the Knife”. They perform it upside down, inside out, with each other’s bows, and in any other way they can dream up! No wonder they’ve been called the “Harlem Globetrotters” of piano quartets.
For less frenetic music listening… connect to "Free Gal" at your local library.

STUDENT OPPORTUNITY
Special Opportunity at the Fells: Join the first team of Teen Docent volunteers.
Students! Are you looking for a unique summer volunteer opportunity? How would you like to volunteer during the summer outside on the beautiful grounds of The John Hay Estate at The Fells in Newbury? You can become a docent, a tour guide, and take small groups around this beautiful, restored home that was the family home of John Milton Hay at the turn of the century. Here is why it is a great volunteer opportunity:

  • The hours are flexible.
  • There will be a one day workshop to learn about the three generations of the Hay family who vacationed here and learn about what life was like for this famous family. After working with a mentor, you will take small groups of visitors for 45 minute tours of the house.
  • You can receive community service credit.
  • It can be considered an experiential learning opportunity that might lead to high school credit.
  • You will be trained in Red Cross first aid/CPR.

Most of all, it is a friendly well-established summer destination for visitors who come from around the state to enjoy the home and gardens. Student volunteers will meet and greet visitors. It will be an opportunity to experience the reward of being a volunteer at this historic home with its beautiful gardens. It will also foster public speaking skills and confidence. There are so many interesting and wonderful stories about how the Hay family spent their summers here in our community. It is a fun and exciting place to be during the summer with the possibility of earning school credit for community service or for course credit for experiential learning. Please consider spending time with us this summer!
