Through the end of January and into the beginning of February, we are welcoming ~20 faculty candidates on campus as part of our cluster hire initiative to showcase Drexel Engineering. I hope you are as excited as I am to engage with our candidates and demonstrate the warm and innovative community that we are. What an exciting time to be a Dragoneer!

Return FAQ for Instructors: Winter Quarter / Spring Semester 2022
Drexel University returned to in-person instruction for the Winter Quarter / Spring Semester 2022 the week of January 17. The Office of the Provost has developed a page of answers to frequently asked questions about the return to campus as it relates to academics and the classroom. For the latest public health and COVID-19 guidelines, please visit the Drexel Response to Coronavirus.
Author Funding for Open Access Publishing
As part of its efforts to raise awareness of open access to research, the Drexel University Libraries is pleased to announce the launch of a pilot Open Access Publishing Fund. The fund will help subsidize the article processing charges (APCs) Drexel scholars must pay to publish in Open Access (OA) journals. Starting in 2022, the Libraries will provide up to $2,000 per author to cover the APC costs required to publish in an approved OA publication. All Drexel University researchers, faculty, staff and currently enrolled students from any discipline or University department who have an accepted manuscript may apply for funds, regardless of alternative funding. The application process is now open through June 2022. Funds will be awarded on a first come, first approved basis until June 30, 2022, or the fund is depleted.
2022 Summer Faculty Fellowship to Israel
Applications are currently being sought for the biannual Faculty Fellowship program to be held in Israel between May 21-June 3, 2022 and June 4-17, 2022. Ideally suited to first-time travelers to Israel, the program has two major components and objectives. For the academic exchange component, each participant is introduced to, or paired with, Israeli counterparts in their field of study. There will be extensive touring and visits to historical sites, as well as exposing participants to Israel’s dynamic technological and scientific advancements, industry, culture and life. Participants will hear from speakers from all walks of Israeli society and join in debate on academic, political and economic topics . Interested parties should apply at www.ff2israel.org, or contact Rene Reinhard at rreinhard@jnf.org, Eileen Wedeen at ewedeen@mwio.org, or call (212) 439-7855 directly with any referrals or recommendations.
Feedback on New NSF Proposal Budget Template
We are seeking feedback on a new internal budget template for NSF proposals. This budget template is intended to assist faculty and staff in the budget creation process with a format that follows NSF guidelines and is easy to navigate. You can download the budget template here. Please remember that budgets developed in this template are not final or official. This template is intended for planning purposes only. COEUS is still the university's official system of record for proposal budgets and must be used to finalize proposal budgets in accordance with university requirements. Please send all feedback to Chad Morris ( cam83@drexel.edu) and Andy Sabol ( aws63@drexel.edu).
CONGRATULATIONS
Thirty faculty and staff members from the College of Engineering were among the more than 600 Drexel University employees who achieved service milestones in 2021. Leading the list were Bruce Eisenstein, PhD, Arthur J. Rowland Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering (50 years), Bakhtier Farouk, PhD, J. Harland Billings Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics (40 years), and Wayne Hill, Executive Director of Technical Operations and Infrastructure (40 years).
Gary Friedman, PhD, professor of electrical and computer engineering, and Fei Lu, PhD, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering, are the recipients of an Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) Research and Development Program grant from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for their project entitled “Evaluate Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC).” The project will investigate interference effects on UAS from static magnetic and electromagnetic fields generated by a laboratory-based power line system to better understand how these will affect the navigation and localization units on a UAS.
Yury Gogotsi, PhD, Distinguished University and Charles T. and Ruth M. Bach Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, has received an AFOSR Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) grant with Ballydel Technologies to develop a scalable process for the manufacture of MXene-based coatings that exhibit superior properties. These coatings will be designed for use in a variety of aerospace structures and amenable to a scalable spray coating technique.
Christopher Sales, PhD, associate professor of civil, architectural, and environmental engineering, has received funding from Michael Baker International, a leading provider of engineering and consulting services that works to make the communities they serve safer, more accessible, more sustainable, and more prosperous. This project aims to provide research expertise and capabilities to The Water Center at the University of Pennsylvania in their efforts to determine the amount and investigate the source of bacterial contamination in the Schuylkill and Delaware Rivers during combined sewer overflow events.
