This past weekend Paige Bueckers, former Peter Hobart Student and current UConn basketball standout, teamed up with Jamad Fiin and Stockx partner ProjectBackboard to renovate the Peter Hobart/Nelson Park basketball court.

The large-scale art installation is meant to strengthen the community, improve park safety, encourage multi-generational play, and inspire people to think more critically and creatively about their environment.

"Paige Bueckers was born and raised in St. Louis Park and attended Peter Hobart Primary. Jamad Fiin grew up visiting family and friends in the area, and today hosts basketball camps for young Somali women interested in the sport. The court creative pays homage to the backgrounds and cultures of the two athletes. The wavy lines are representative of woven Somali textiles from Jamad’s heritage and the flowing waves nod to Paige who is famously known for “going with the flow.” The colors featured are illustrative of both a Somali sunset and Paige’s favorite colors. The encouraging words, “Be You. Be Great.” are prominently featured at center court and serve as an ode to Paige’s father, who recites the phrase to her before every game. The mantra also speaks to Jamad – who wears a hijab in observance of her Muslim faith – as she aims to empower young women of all backgrounds to be themselves."

IB Inquiry Week of October 10th

This week we honored Indigenous Peoples’ Day.  This special day gives us a devoted time highlight the brilliance and contributions of Native/Indigenous People.

As a school district, and community, we acknowledge that we gather on the land of the Dakota and Ojibwe peoples. We acknowledge the Dakota and Ojibwe community, their elders both past and present, as well as future generations. St. Louis Park Public Schools also acknowledges that it was founded upon exclusions and erasures of many Indigenous Peoples, including those on whose land this school district is located. This acknowledgement demonstrates a commitment to dismantling the ongoing legacies of colonial power and the district’s desire to support the ongoing work of local Indigenous communities to thrive in our schools.

All week, classes and staff have been having important conversations around the  learning that still needs to happen and myths about history and Native people that need to be unlearned.

After learning about Dakota and Ojibwe core values, 5th graders in Ms. Metil/Smiley/Lawrence’s class moved into action by creating their own acknowledgement and highlighting one of the Dakota and/or Ojibwe values that they share and want to uplift.

PH Direct Fundraiser Update

We are off to a strong start with our annual fundraiser! As of Wednesday evening, October 12th, we have raised $4,013.24. Thank you to those who have already donated!

We have one more week to reach our goal and almost $15,000 to go, so please reach out to those you know who would be interested in sponsoring your child for our school fundraiser. These funds help cover field trip excursions (admission and busing), classroom art-technology-& science materials, and special in class experiences that ALL students benefit from. Click here to donate!

Ms Eames 3rd grade class won the traveling trophy for raising the most funds Tuesday October 11th. This flamingo trophy, lovingly named Chicky Nug Nug by Ms Milton’s classroom, travels to the classroom that raises the most funds each day. Ms Eames and MsMilton’s classes even created a fabulous book of pictures and stories all about Chicky Nug Nug’s family to level up the fun and creativity! The PTO sponsors some small prizes each day to keep the kids engaged and excited about helping their school. THANK YOU for supporting their learning!

A Message from Health Services

Should my child stay home from school?

In general, the following information is intended to help decide when a student should stay home:

  • Fever of 100 degrees or more. The student is to stay home for 24 hours after the temperature returns to normal without the use of fever reducing medication.
  • Vomited or had diarrhea. The student is to stay home until 24 hours after the last episode.
  • Any uncontrolled cough.
  • Rash for which you do not know the cause. Check with your family physician/clinic before sending the student to school.
  • If feeling ill/unwell and will not be able to fully participate in school activities.

COVID testing is recommended for students with COVID illness symptoms. Tests are available at school. If your student tests positive, notify the school attendance line and a health services staff member will follow-up with the appropriate guidance.

When keeping your child home call the 24 hour school attendance line to report the illness at 952-928-6604.

Middle School Students inspire "Idle-Free SLP" City Initiative

Seventh Graders Suwaydah Aden, Ibtisam Ahmed, and Erin Enright coined the term "Idle-Free SLP" during their Climate Action presentation last spring during science class. Their slogan and presentation have since served as inspiration for a new initiative in Saint Louis Park to reduce carbon emissions in our school parking lots.

As you pick up and drop off your kids this year, you may notice some new “Idle-Free SLP” signs. That’s because the City of St. Louis Park, in collaboration with Park Nicollet, is launching a student-driven idling reduction campaign for cleaner air and healthier lungs. Idling, or running the engine while parked, can produce more tailpipe emissions per minute than driving and has been linked to asthma symptoms, heart and lung disease, cognitive issues, and premature death.

Children are even more vulnerable to air pollution than adults because they breathe more air per pound of body weight and their respiratory systems are not yet fully developed. This makes idling near schools – one of the most common idling scenarios as parents wait to pick up their children – especially dangerous.

Learn more and get involved by checking out the city website or by attending our poster-making session on Thursday, October 13 at St. Louis Park Middle School from 4-5 p.m. Snacks, beverages, and poster-making materials will be provided. Click here to register in advance.
