Welcome to Life Stories

Tada! The very first issue of our very first newsletter.

‘Life Stories’ hopes to inform and amuse you with celebrity video clips, articles and images from YLP and the wider worlds of film and TV,  humour, surviving the pandemic and anything else we want to get off our chest.

Wacky parties, how-to pieces, really ugly formal wear and, naturally, some fun memories from 35 years of making movies and meeting some pretty amazing people.

Sure, we’ll engage in a little shameless self-promotion, but will try to keep it to a minimum.

Why ‘Life Stories’? Because our primary pursuit is chronicling and celebrating people’s lives.

Please let us know what you think of the first issue.

Thanks,

Bob Pomerantz, founder, YLP

Life Legends

Memories of Ted Rogers

I first met Ted Rogers in the early 1990s when he took part in several tribute videos we did for friends and colleagues of his. What struck me: He was very tall; very friendly; would always appear in a beautiful yet rumpled suit and, above all, he made me feel important by asking questions about me and my business.

He might have been a communications and broadcasting titan and, for a while, Canada’s 5th richest person, but, boy, was he ever down to earth.

So I was thrilled when, in 2002, Ted was being feted as B’nai Brith Toronto’s “person of the year” and I was asked to do a funny tribute video about him. The biopic was hosted by former Global TV anchor Peter Kent and a highlight was a phony “Q&A” between Rogers and Kent.

About Bob

Hi. I’m Bob Pomerantz. My colleague, Lori Ference, thinks I need to tell you about myself. Well, I once worked as a jail guard. Am fairly short. Think Sgt. Bilko was the best sitcom ever. Am first cousins with funnyman Hart Pomerantz, who is still hilarious and still in touch with his former comedy partner, Lorne Michaels, and still way older and shorter than me. Was on staff at the Toronto Star in my 20s and 30s while also freelancing for National Lampoon magazine. Started making tribute videos in 1986 and am still at it–even during COVID. I’m triple-vaxed. Hope you like the newsletter.

Will that do it, Lori?!

Really Ugly Formal Wear

ugly formalware.jpeg

I don’t know why people insist on wearing hideous tuxedos and dresses to fancy parties. They always attract the wrong kind of attention. I’ve been to a lot of galas and seen my share of odious outfits, but this orange one here takes the ugly cake.

If you’ve seen UGLIER, send it in. Be it tux, ball gown, tuxedo t-shirt, you in your Bar Mitzvah Nehru suit or a hideous, over- the-top christening gown, send in a picture of it. We promise to run it—but only if it’s really awful or weird.

The person who submits the ugliest formal wear photo -- by Feb. 28 -- will win 2 Cineplex movie passes!

Want to celebrate a milestone during the pandemic?

Make a Tribute Covideo!

Looks like we might not be going back to normal for a while—which means no big live gatherings. But people still want to mark milestone birthdays, landmark wedding anniversaries and retirements from successful careers. And don’t we all need laughter now more than ever?

Solution? A surprise tribute Covideo, a tribute video specifically designed for these pandemic times. My company has already done quite a few, they received rave reviews, and they cost 25-35% less because the videography is done differently.
