Alex joined Titcomb's last summer when we were able to reopen to the public, and she quickly became part of our bookshop family. She's a great reader and has such a kind and positive attitude. One of Alex's talents is her prowess in creating dazzling displays throughout the store. We hope you will say hello to Alex next time you visit!

Where did you grow up?
On planet Earth.
What was your favorite childhood book?
I always loved comic books, I read and drew anything from Marvel comics and had a soft spot for a couple of funny characters called Asterix and Obelix. They are heroes in a French comic book series about warriors who fight the Roman Republic during the era of Julius Caesar.
What are you reading right now? Can you review it in one sentence?
I just finished “The Talbot Odyssey” another great spy thriller by Nelson DeMille, whose books are so captivating and easy to read. DeMille’s writing makes it very difficult to put the book down and you just want to read it to the end. This is a story of spies and double agents from the past and present who try to manipulate the course of history for the ultimate goal of power and control.
What is your favorite part about working at Titcomb’s?
I love the warm homey feeling the Titcomb family and shop surround you with. It’s like being transported back to a time when things were simple, wholesome and good. I always refer to the Bookshop as a “real treasure” where so many customers, long-time and new, genuinely love to come in and so often share very personal stories about how the bookshop has impacted their lives. We are all part of a great team that is hardworking and very fun to be with. I truly believe the positive energy and happiness that is at Titcomb’s spreads to those who visit us from all over the country and beyond.
If you were a pizza delivery person, how would you benefit from scissors?
That’s easy....if pizza wasn’t properly sliced at the shop you can fix that. If you need an ice scraper for your windshield you can cut a pizza box and use that to scrape the ice so you can see where you’re driving. (Safety first!) You can go full Belichick if you’re in football season while making deliveries....might help OR harm your tips depending on the fans :)

The Read Happy Project
We are so happy to support the Read Happy project, which was founded in 2020 through the Sandwich Public Library adult book discussion group to provide books to needy children and families whose access to books at school and library has been limited during the Covid pandemic.
Just before Valentine’s Day, Read Happy provided packages to Cape Cod Healthy Families, a support program for first-time young moms and dads. Each package included handmade blankets for the babies/toddlers, hand stitched pillowcases for the parents, as well as board books for the children and novels for adults.
This project was a collaborative effort with Raising a Reader Massachusetts, which recognizes that the reading life is inspired in infancy, fostered throughout childhood, and continued for life.
Would you like to help or make a donation? Please contact Read Happy at readhappy2020@gmail.com or check out their Facebook page.

Recommended by Vicky:
This is a haunting and well written debut novel set in a small town on the Penobscot River in Maine. It is the story of family, community, indigenous culture and the environment. It's also a story of how our actions can impact our lives for years and even generations to come.

“This is the compulsively readable story of Bennett, a once-famous artist now divorced and impoverished, who lives in his garden studio and spies on his tenants through the windows. Super Host is hilarious, and touching, too; Kate Russo is a terrific storyteller.” —Claire Messud, author
(FYI: Kate Russo is the daughter of one of our favorite authors, Richard Russo)

"With patience, precision and language so clear and generous, you feel as if you are being handed a precious and fragile truth, Laird Hunt brings us an indelible portrait of a twentieth century American woman. It takes Hunt only a hundred and fifty pages to take us from one end of Zorrie's life to the other, and yet I closed the book feeling that I had read an epic." - Marisa Silver, author
|
|
"Cherie Jones' How the One-Armed Sister Sweeps Her House is an intricately plotted allegory that explores the consequences of believing that you know better than the women who made you and charts the inheritance of trauma that is all too common in Caribbean women's lives. With rare compassion and deft storytelling, Jones renders a narrative that is haunting and unforgettable." - Naomi Jackson

Recommended by Vicky:
Frighteningly realistic and gripping novel about a young girl and her siblings - victims of extreme abuse by their father with the passive support of their mother. Alexandra managed to escape captivity and get help, but we see how, in adulthood, no one in the family can escape the impact of what occurred.
