City Celebrates Build Garland Day
Progress was unveiled in swift fashion on Build Garland Day, Friday, Feb. 11. The day was capped by the opening of the Garland Animal Shelter & Adoption Center, the most anticipated project from the City’s record $423.7 million bond election.

By the time they reached the Animal Shelter, City officials had toured four other sites on that same day, marking rapid progress in completion of bond projects approved by voters.

The other sites included the upgraded Gale Fields Recreation Center, the new playground at Dorfman Park, the fully renovated Transportation Operations & Maintenance Facility and the new Police Property & Evidence Building.

Black History Month 2022
Garland Independent School District elementary, middle and high schools will perform dance and step team routines in "Black History Month 2022 - Journeys to Joy: Where We've Come From, Where We Are, Where We're Headed."

The event will take place at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 17, at the Granville Arts Center, 300 N. Fifth St.

Admission is free and open to the public.

Welcome to Garland Class Saturday, Feb. 19
Whether you are new to Garland, or were born and raised here, this is the class to get better acquainted with what makes Garland a great place to live!

Join us from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Feb. 19, at City Hall, 200 N. Fifth St., and learn about the different services of City departments, how your taxpayer dollars are being used and how you can get involved.

Adult Craft Workshop at the South Garland Branch Library Saturday, Feb. 26
Crafters can make refrigerator magnets using mini calabash gourds at the library's adult craft workshop, 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 26, at the South Garland Branch Library, 4845 Broadway Blvd.

Calabash gourds grow widely in Africa, and their uses will be detailed during the event in honor of Black History Month. The gourds have hard shells that make great canvases for painting or adding different craft materials, such as beads. Participants will use a variety of materials to create a customized fridge magnet.

The workshop is free and all supplies are provided by the library. Registration is required to attend and is limited to 24 participants ages 18 and older. Call 972-205-3931 to register.
Student Ambassadors Paid Internship Program and Upcoming Hiring Event
Calling all students at least 16 years of age! The City of Garland is accepting applications for the 2022 Student Ambassadors program through Friday, March 18.

During the eight-week paid internship program, students will gain meaningful work experience, obtain skills training and attend programmed events throughout the summer focused on the value of careers in public service.

Interested students are invited to attend the Student Ambassadors Hiring Event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, March 5, at Dallas College Garland Center, 675 W. Walnut St.

Lawn Care Assistance Applications Due Tuesday, March 1
The Garland Code Compliance Department is accepting applications for the Lawn Care Assistance Program. This program will provide summer mowing for seniors (60 years of age and older) and disabled Garland homeowners who are physically and/or financially unable to maintain their yards to comply with City codes and have no other assistance available.

Applications are available online and can also be picked up at our Code Compliance office,
210 Carver St., Suite 101. Residents who are unable to pick up an application may call 972-485-6400 and request that an application be emailed or mailed.

Application packets must be filled out completely and returned to Code Compliance along with required documents. All applications are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis until all spots are filled. For more information, visit GarlandTX.gov or call 972-485-6400.
COVID-19 Vaccines, Boosters Available at Garland's Public Health Clinic

You can get the COVID-19 vaccine or booster without an appointment at our Public Health Clinic, 206 Carver St., between 7:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The Public Health Clinic is a vaccine site, not a testing site. A list of testing sites, along with more resources, is available at GarlandTX.gov. Every home in the U.S. can now order four free at-⁠home COVID-⁠19 tests at covidtests.gov.
Flu Shots Available at Garland's Public Health Clinic

Flu shots are available at the Garland Public Health Clinic, 206 Carver St., from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. weekdays for adults, children and seniors who are insured. Low-cost flu vaccines for uninsured children and adults are also available.

Hazard Mitigation Action Plan Public Meetings
Feb. 17 and 26
The Office of Emergency Management wants your input to update the Hazard Mitigation Action Plan for 2022. Emergency Management staff will host two public meetings: 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 17, and 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 26, in Room 417 in the Fire Administration Building, 1500 State Highway 66. Take this opportunity to participate in focused discussions to confirm all possible hazards and all impacts have been considered, and help identify relevant projects that could further reduce the impacts of disaster. COVID-19 Updates
As of Monday, Feb. 7, the Garland Health Department has received reports of 4,977 active cases out of 58,620 confirmed cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) in Garland residents since the beginning of the pandemic, as well as 692 deaths. The City updates its posted case numbers each Monday.

The City of Garland and its community partners are facilitating access to recovery programs for Garland residents who have been impacted by COVID-19. Assistance is available for a variety of services, including financial assistance for housing, utilities, food and medical expenses, as well as workforce training and job placement services, and counseling and emergency shelter assistance.
