TWENTY-NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
|
|
JOIN US FOR MASS THIS WEEKEND
|
|
Saturday at 5:00pm
Sunday at 9:00am
Sunday at 11:00am
PRACTICE OF FAITH
Jesus instructs the disciples to pray always. If we want to draw closer to God, we must persist in prayer. Look back at how you have prayed over the years. What are high points in your prayer life? What are the low points? What was happening in your life at those time? How might your prayer need to change now?
Please continue to self-screen. Stay home if you are not feeling well and celebrate Mass with us via livestream. We are doing our best to continue to provide a safe space to worship for everyone. Click here to see current COVID safety measures.

Wednesday, November 2
|
|
We will be remembering our dearly departed from the past year with a slideshow of their pictures. If you would like to participate, please send a picture of your departed loved one and her/his name to aklepper@sjvkirkland.org by Sunday, October 30.
You may also bring a photo of your deceased loved one from the past year to the parish office to be placed on a table by the baptismal font for the month of November. Please make sure the name of the person pictured, your name, and contact info, are on the back of the picture so we can get the photo back to you at the end of the month.

We are a month away from our Gala Dinner and Auction!
Mark your calendars for Saturday, November 5 – join us for Mass prior at 4:00pm or come at 5:00pm to start Bidding and Bond-ing.
Invitations are coming. Raffle ticket sales have started. The Mystery Bowl that will be auctioned off is available to fill. AND you can purchase a seat for the dinner on our website, after Mass, or in the church office during the week. Dinner will be a Surf ‘N Turf plate and admission is $100/Secret Agent.
We are currently accepting items for the auction. Prime Day Early Access starts today. Please remember the auction as you are perusing the pages full of discounted items. If you do buy yourself a bargain – consider buying two – one for you and one for the auction. After all, if you like it, someone else is bound to also. Target and Overstock.com are having fabulous sales as well. Please also take a look at our Auction Wish List to see if there are items you can find deals on that you would simply like to donate. Thank you for considering the auction. Procurement forms are available on the Welcome Table.
(Also remember that you can support SJV every time you shop! Go to smile.amazon.com and select St John Mary Vianney before you begin shopping. Amazon will remember your selection and then every eligible purchase you make at smile.amazon.com will result in a donation. Your Prime Day shopping can support SJV in two ways!)
We will have a wine game again this year, but the liquor laws are different than 3 years ago. We cannot sell any alcohol at less than its market value. Therefore, we need to adhere to the following rules:
- Please donate your favorite $20.00 - $24.99 bottle of wine.
- The wine game will have a $25 price.
- Whichever bottle you end up with was someone at the parish’s favorite under $25 wine. It's an exciting way to try what may become your new and affordable favorite!
Another new rule is that prior to receiving our liquor license or any alcohol donations, we need to send a list to the State Liquor Board of who is donating the alcohol. In response to this new requirement, I am asking that you sign up with your name and contact number if you are thinking about donating any alcohol to the auction. I will be submitting that list on October 17 so that we can start receiving alcohol donations in time for the auction. Thank you for helping with this!
This year our Fund-a-Need will be an outdoor project – outside the new Doors of Heaven. As stated in last year’s Fund-a-Need information and then reiterated by the Archdiocese in their approval of the door project, we are looking at doing some re-landscaping and creating a walkway from the doors to a hardscaped gathering area near the eastern parking lot. This will involve moving at least two of the rhododendron bushes and relocating them as well as creating a pathway through the earthen berm. We plan some other hardscaped features possibly including lighting, seating, and a gathering area. We are hoping to raise $40,000 to plan and execute this project. Any money raised above the amount needed would go into our General Fund.
We would also love to have you join us in setting up for the gala, cleaning up for the gala, or if this is not your year to join us at the gala – please buy a raffle ticket or two, donate some items, or come work during the auction. Signups for auction volunteers are in the Narthex.
Thank you – we can’t wait to celebrate our SJV family together!

THE LITTLE WAY OF MARRIAGE
This Saturday, October 15 after the 5:00pm Mass
|
|
St. Therese became one of the greatest saints by learning to do little things with great love. St. Therese Teaches us:
-
how to be other-centered
-
how to trust in God
-
how little actions done for others with great love can transform our lives (and the world!)
The Little Way of Marriage takes these powerful spiritual truths from St. Therese and shows you how to apply them to your Catholic marriage.
With the realities and responsibilities of daily life, raising kids, balancing work and home, you look up and realize the connection you enjoy is not always there. There is a longing for deeper connection in all marriages. No matter where you are in your marriage, here’s the good news we want to share with you - Doing little things with great love can open your marriage to the transformative power of God’s grace.
Please join us for this presentation by Dr. Sarah and Nathan Bartel, brought to you by the SJV Cana Commission
Free childcare is available. Email Lstanger@sjvkirkland.org to reserve a spot for your child.
Sarah Bartel holds a Ph.D. in Theology from the Catholic University of America. She wrote her dissertation on the family life of St. Therese and her Parents, Sts. Louis and Zelie Martin. Nathan earned an M.A. in Catholic Philosophy from the Catholic University of America, where he focused on virtue ethics and wrote his thesis on “the Productive Household.” Together, they have served in marriage preparation and marriage enrichment ministry in our parish and diocese for over 10 years. We have also been speakers, columnists, and radio hosts along with raising their 5 children!

|
Just a reminder that we will not be doing our regular dinner this month. Instead, we will be attending the Knights of Columbus Oktoberfest on Saturday, October 22 after the 5:00pm Mass. Our next scheduled event will be Saturday, November 19. More information to come.
