Centennial District - Pack 29

Cub Scout Pack 29 located in the Centennial District has done a tremendous job growing within the Scout Reach Program. One of the newest Cub Master leaders, Mr. Michael Black, has been a strong advocate and has already made a positive impact within the Unit. He has helped youth membership through initiatives like the Metro Parks community by recruiting kids from the Soccer Program.

Mr. Black also visits schools such as Alex Green Elementary to talk with young students regarding program activities and generating an interest by explaining the benefits of joining the Pack through their after-school Cub Scout program. This past month, these individuals have received their Bobcat Badges alongside learning the Scout “Oath and law.”

Mr. Caleb Cockrill is one of our Cub Scout Pack leaders and he has been very instrumental in generating more interest and participation through his classroom knowledge and instruction. This was demonstrated by teaching his fellow Pack enrollees on the proper preparation of Dishwater Omelets.

.

Overall, this program has grown and developed a great deal of discipline from both leaders and their ability to mentor and be a shining example for other Metro Park Units. This February, they will also be invited to attend and honor a historical moment by taking part in the Flag ceremony for Black History month. As this Pack continues to grow, we are excited to see what the future has in store.

Safe Scouting Reminders

Winter Activity safety TIPS

Sledding Practices:

Most people agree that kids on slippery saucers careening down an icy hill at upwards of 20 miles per hour can be dangerous. According to the Center on Injury Research at Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, more than 20,000 kids younger than 19 are treated for sledding injuries annually. Assist our Scouting community by sharing these important guidelines this winter:

  • Ensure all participants have the proper attire; this includes an appropriate, properly fitted helmet.
  • Check slopes for bare spots, holes, and obstructions, such as fences, rocks, poles, or trees.
  • Make sure all equipment is in good condition, free of sharp edges and cracks. It is recommended to utilize steerable sleds.
  • Riders should sit or lay on their back on top of the sled with feet pointing downhill; never sled headfirst.

Remind units to use the Scouting SAFE Checklist when engaging in any winter activities.

Guide to Safe Scouting Winter Activities

Transporting Scouts this Winter:

Please help us ensure the safety of Scouts during transport to and from any Scouting activity this winter. The Department of Transportation Winter Driving Tips are available here.

When transporting Scouts remember:

  • Driving time is limited to a maximum of 10 hours in one 24-hour period, regardless of drivers available.
  • You must meet Scouting's Barriers to Abuse supervision requirements, including two-deep leadership and no one-on-one during transportation.

Use the SAFE Transportation Checklist and Pre-Trip Inspection for planning transport and completing a vehicle pre-trip inspection. The SAFE Transportation Checklist and Pre-Trip Inspection are available here.
