Welcome to October and ¡Feliz Mes de la Herencia Hispana! We are excited to celebrate our Hispanic heritage in our local communities, and the cooler weather makes it even nicer to celebrate outside.

Earlier this month, Faculty Success welcomed Dr. Marcella Clinard to the team as a Faculty Development Specialist. In her new role, Dr. Clinard will work on ways to increase faculty recruitment, development, and satisfaction.

Faculty Success and the UNT Faculty Senate are actively promoting giving to the Faculty Senate Endowment Fund to support the renaming of the Faculty Lounge as a tribute to the late Dr. Bertina Hildreth Combes, who was a dedicated leader and mentor in the UNT community from 1989 to 2021 and served as Vice Provost for Faculty Success. Endowment funds will also be used for the maintenance of the beautiful Faculty Lounge and other Faculty Senate initiatives. We are closing in on our goal, and we invite you to give as you can as a tribute to Dr. Combes’ legacy of leadership, service, and teaching.

In her Faculty Talk, Dr. Simmons will provide a framework for managing stress and preventing and reducing burnout.

In her Workshop for Academic Leaders, Dr. Simmons will highlight positive behaviors to pursue and counterproductive behaviors leaders can work to reduce to build burnout resistance for themselves and their teams.

Research in the Classroom Faculty Panel

Join your colleagues for a multidisciplinary panel focused on tips and tools for incorporating research — including your own scholarly agenda — into your courses.

Dr. Lee Hughes, Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies in the College of Science, was recently honored with the 2024 Carski Award for Undergraduate Education from the American Society for Microbiology.

Dr. Aja Martinez, Associate Professor of English, earned two awards from the National Council of Teachers of English: the David H. Russell Award for Distinguished Research in the Teaching of English and the NCTE National Intellectual Freedom Award.

Assistant Professor of History Dr. Arunima Datta will represent UNT across the pond during her Oct. 28 "talk and tour" of her book, Waiting on Empire: A History of Indian Travelling Ayahs in Britain, at the Museum of the Home in London.

Research funding opportunity

The 2024-25 American Athletic Conference Research Grant Program offers up to $15,000 in funding for scholarly work related to student-athlete well-being.
