Special Feature: Aplomado Falcon

The fourth in a series of videos celebrating Laguna Atascosa highlights a truly amazing success story. The Aplomado Falcon was extirpated from the United States but determination and ingenuity from the Peregrine Fund, USFWS and private landowners brought these beautiful falcons back to Texas where they have flourished.

Ocelots are...Everywhere?
|
|
Of course not! But fans of ocelots can be found all over the world. This popular cat CAN be found at Laguna Atascosa in the wild and, if you are really lucky, you might see one. Otherwise, the best chance to see one is at a zoo or wildlife center. In this new feature, we want to explore all the places you might find an ocelot or, at least, fans of ocelots.
If your organization or zoo wants to be featured in a future newsletter, just send us an email (sorry, no businesses).
Our first ocelot sighting is at Schoolcraft College in Livonia, MI (north of Detroit). Schoolcraft College is a community college, established in 1961, offering more than 130 academic programs that can lead to 48 associate degrees, 68 certificates, and 1 bachelor’s degree. The current enrollment is 15,561 and top programs include Culinary Arts, Nursing, Criminal Justice and Liberal Arts.
How did Schoolcraft College become the ocelots? The Dean of Students thinks it came from a student-run contest during the 1960s or 1970s, but no one is really sure!
Below are some cool pics from Schoolcraft. We are loving the bronze ocelot!
