Talia Lakshmi Kolluri's collection of short stories features nine heartbreaking tales told from the perspective of various animals. (My favorite are "The Good Donkey" and “May God Forever Bless the Rhino Keepers.” Both are bittersweet.) Each of the stories either directly or indirectly relates to humanity while examining global issues, including climate change, deforestation, noise pollution, and poaching. By using animal narrators, Kolluri does an excellent job of encouraging readers to look at things from an animal’s point-of-view. While What We Fed to the Manticore is fiction, it will make you think. The author also includes a list of sources at the end of the book citing news articles for further reading.
