Upcoming Professional Development
Week of December 6-10
This week’s spotlight:
The new name is (drum roll).....

The Center for Development and Leadership (CDL)

Thank you to everyone who voted! The hope is that this name will better reflect the mission of the center to serve both faculty and staff.

Who you "otter" know!

Way to go Marian!

Marian Marley
English Instructor

I am sure Marian is an excellent teacher but today I am nominating her for her excellent ADVISING! Marian always takes the time to work with each student and really considers the whole student when advising. She takes the time to review their goals with them and helps students find the best path when the students themselves may not be sure what is the best path for them. Marian is excellent about connecting students to resources when needed and always following up so that students don't fall through the cracks.

PD Opportunities Outside ACC
Promising Practices to Close Equity Gaps Associated with Student Persistence

This webinar is presented by Liz Watkin and Gigi Derballa from Asheville Buncombe Technical Community College. The topic of generational poverty is important for educators, as it sheds light on the diversity of learners we see in higher education, and how this economic diversity can impact their learning. As we are reminded during the webinar, there is far more to poverty than being economically poor. Instructors who are aware of the more common aspects of generational poverty can equip themselves with tools and strategies to ensure all students are given an opportunity to excel.

Incorporating Active Learning Strategies in the College Classroom
January 7 – February 18, 2022
Early enrollment opens Dec. 17
Open enrollment begins Dec. 19

Come explore ways to increase student engagement and participation in your courses. We’ll begin by examining best practices and models of active learning, including case studies, problem-based learning, and collaborative group learning. Along the way, we’ll self-assess the degree to which our current teaching strategies promote active learning. Finally, we’ll stretch beyond our comfort zones and redesign a lesson that is usually taught in a more passive manner.
Note: Due to the nature of the course format, participants are required to be currently actively teaching at least one course section. Participants will need teacher/student interaction to complete the activities for this Academy course.
RDS: Residency Determination Service
Presenter:
Gene Ritter, Residency Program Manager, State Education Assistance Authority

Residency can be challenging for students to navigate. This workshop will provide an explanation of RDS: Residency Determination Service. It will explain the basic legal requirements and recent changes in fall 2021. It will also give tips to help students avoid a non-resident classification. We will discuss what RDS is looking for and how to ease student concerns and challenges.
