South Como Garden Tour

The Saint Paullinators of South Como are celebrating the end of their first installation season with a Garden Tour.  Through the Lawns to Legume Demonstration Neighborhood grant, the group has installed 9 pollinator habitats in South Como including a community habitat at the Orchard Rec Center.

The tour will include the new installations alongside more mature gardens throughout the neighborhood.  Guides will point out native plants, talk about garden care and maintenance and share their experiences with native gardens.

Participants will also have a chance to bring home native plants from our Seedling Steward Program.  If you're not able to make it to the tour, an online map will soon be available at district10comopark.org/l2l.

Get Involved: Final 2022 Lake Cleanup

Saturday, October 8 - 9am-Noon @ Como Pavilion Lakeside (by the Ice Cream Stand and Boat Rentals)

The Como Community Council, in partnership with the Capital Region Watershed District, plans multiple Lake Como cleanup events each year. Volunteers gather with others in the community to clean trash from the lake surface or shoreline. We’ll meet at 6pm near the dock on the lower level lake side of the Pavilion to pick up tools, supplies, and have a refreshment.

District 10 provides trash-grabbers, rakes, buckets, nets, trash bags, and nitrile gloves for those who need them. Or, feel free to provide your own gear. Registration is not required, but it helps us plan and communicate if changes come up.

Harvest Festival Pie Competition Winner

This year’s first Como Community Council Harvest Festival at Tilden Park featured all things harvest: backyard chickens, vegetables from the community garden, fermentation demonstrations and the great

pie bake-off.

Nine community members competed for the coveted Golden Rolling Pin

and gift cards from Hot Hands Pie and Biscuit. Walking around the park you could hear people deep in deliberation as they debated which pie deserved their vote.

In the end, the votes were counted, while bakers waited nervously for the tight count to be announced.  At last, it was announced, the two youngest bakers took home the honors! Milo Zimmerman came in second place with a Strawberry Pie, and Aksel Sheu took home the golden rolling pin with the honors of first place with a Peach Cobbler pie!

2022 Como CURB Cleanup

October 1 through November 30, in front of your own home!

Como Community Council is again teamed up with the Capitol Region Watershed District for the Como Curb Cleanup. When it rains, leaves on streets release nutrients into the water that flows into storm drains and the lake. There it becomes food for invasive algae. Join 100+ neighbors in sweeping your curb once a week this fall to help keep Lake Como clean with this surprisingly effective effort.

Signing up to be an official participant helps us track results and helps (a lot) to support future efforts!
