October Mission:

Rise Against Hunger

FPC’s mission focus in October will be on collecting donations to subsidize the costs of hosting a meal-packing party for Rise Against Hunger (formerly Stop Hunger Now). Rise Against Hunger packs and distributes nutrient-dense meals to areas of high need across the world. On November 5, we will work together to pack 10,000 meals for people in need, and it will only take about two hours to get the job done!

The meals we pack could be sent to any of 38 countries, from Burundi to Zimbabwe. Rise Against Hunger also works with communities in these countries to improve their own long-term food security. In 2022, volunteers for Rise Against Hunger packed 44.5 million meals. You can learn more about this great organization here.

Be on the lookout over the next few weeks for more information about Rise Against Hunger and what it does, and also for the opportunity to register to participate on November 5.

Next Wednesday Fellowship: God's Love and Forgiveness

Join us on Wednesday for the 6th week of our exploration of our mission statement, which focuses on what it means to be forgiven by God. We will discuss how God’s forgiveness is not something we earn, but a gift that we receive freely, even when we don’t deserve it. Our scripture readings for this lesson will be Hosea 2:21-23, Luke 18:9-14, and Ephesians 2:11-18. Fellowship dinner will begin at 5:30 PM in the fellowship hall, followed by the adult study and activities for youth and children.

If you don’t already participate in a Home Group, please sign up here. Access the curriculum on our website or watch for it to drop on our Home Groups Facebook site. If you need help finding or starting a Home Group, please email Dave Welch.

Reading Buddies

Help us support at-risk students in kindergarten through second grade with positive adult mentors, role models, and incentives to ensure they enter third grade reading on grade level. Third grade is a critical benchmark for young learners, and studies show that students who are not reading on grade level by third grade are four times less likely to graduate high school on time. 95.5% of Reading Buddies students showed literacy gain on annual assessments. Reading Buddies will start meeting on October 17th, so there is still time to volunteer. Even if you can’t volunteer, every donation makes a difference. To reach out to donate or volunteer, contact Beth Flannagan at [email protected].

Organist's Footnotes

John S. Dixon (b. 1957) was classically trained in piano and organ. As a child, he was active in music at the Anglican church and was a founding member of the Southend Boys Choir, one of Britain’s leading youth choirs. He earned degrees from Queen’s College, Oxford University, and Harvard Business School. Since moving to the United States in 1988, his composing has flourished, largely due to his involvement in the music ministry at Providence Presbyterian Church in Virginia Beach, where he is currently organist and composer-in-residence. He is also the National Treasurer and Councilor for Finance and Development for the AGO.

“John Dixon’s compositions are popular with casual listeners because they are based on familiar tunes and with fellow organists because he writes music that he can play himself. His pieces are also short, because he hates having to turn pages. I am currently playing three of John’s compositions: Chorale Prelude on “To God Alone on High Be Glory” (opening voluntary): This piece is based on a hymn by Nikolaus Decius, and John slows down the tempo to create a more peaceful feeling. Voluntary on “St. Clement” (offertory): This tuneful piece is best known as the evening hymn “The Day Thou Gavest, Lord, Is Ended.” Postlude on “Austrian Hymn” (closing voluntary): This piece uses the famous hymn tune composed by Franz Joseph Haydn, and John pays homage to the style of Paul Manz. I hope you enjoy listening to these pieces!” says our own organist Bob Greene.
