DAIRY PRIDE Act upholds proper milk labeling
Current Food and Drug Administration regulations define dairy products as being from dairy animals. Although existing federal regulations are clear, the FDA has not enforced these labeling regulations and the mislabeling of plant-based imitation dairy products as ‘milk’, ‘yogurt’ and ‘cheese’ has increased rapidly.
Sens. Tammy Baldwin, D-Wisc., chair of the Senate Agriculture Appropriations Subcommittee, and U.S. Senator Jim Risch, R-Idaho, reintroduced bipartisan legislation in the Senate to combat what they say is the “unfair practice of mislabeling non-dairy products using dairy names.” Representatives Peter Welch, D-Vt., and Mike Simpson, R-Idaho, are introducing bipartisan companion legislation in the House.

Agricultural trade can mitigate climate change impacts
Agricultural producers deal firsthand with changing weather conditions, and extreme events such as drought or flooding can impact their productivity and profit. Climate change models project such events will occur more often in the future. But studies of the economic consequences of weather and climate on agriculture typically focus on local impacts only.
A new study from the University of Illinois looks at how changes in weather – including extreme events – may decrease crop profit in one state while increasing profits in other states. The secret ingredient: U.S. interstate trade. It is expected to mitigate the economic impact of climate change by up to $14.5 billion by the middle of the century.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT
ADSA Annual Meeting will be Virtual
Based on responses from over 1,200 members and current COVID recommendations, the ADSA Board of Directors has decided to hold its 2021 annual meeting in July as a virtual meeting. This was not an easy decision as member opinions were varied and it is uncertain what COVID restrictions will be in place by July; however, in the end, the board voted to hold the meeting virtually on the planned dates in July because:
(1) many members would not be able to attend either in-person date in the fall,
(2) summer is the normal time for our meetings, and
(3) there were too many conflicts with other meetings in the fall.
While opinions may vary, we must go forward working together. We have a common mission: to promote the dissemination and exchange of knowledge that will improve the global dairy sector. Our common goal is to have a great meeting in 2021 that will achieve this mission.
The meeting will be virtual, but we will think creatively about how to make it a highly successful meeting. Our plan is to have recorded talks and live discussions at various times throughout the day. Some symposia will be converted to webinars that we will hold in the fall. Make plans now to join us for the 2021 ADSA Virtual Annual Meeting.
If you have ideas on how to improve our meetings now and in the future, please do not hesitate to contact us at ADSA@assochq.org.
Mike VandeHaar, Overall Program Chair
Rich Erdman, ADSA President
Just a reminder discounted Annual Meeting registration is one of the many benefits of ADSA membership. The savings on annual meeting registration will largely cover the cost of membership so if you aren’t a member be sure to become one before registering and take advantage of this great benefit.

ADSA joins in advocating for research funding
Action is beginning on the Federal FY22 budget. ADSA has joined in several coalition letters advocating for research funding. Two recent letters are highlighted below. Additional letters are planned. Copies of these and past letters are available in the Advocacy section of www.adsa.org
ADSA joined over 100 groups in a letter to House and Senate Appropriations Committee leaders requesting their support for $10 million in appropriations for Section 1433 Continuing Animal Health and Disease, Food Security, and Stewardship Research, Education and Extension Programs in the fiscal year 2022 Agriculture Appropriations bill. This program was reauthorized in the 2018 Farm Bill and would enable competitive research grants to address critical priorities in food security, one health and stewardship. (April 20, 2021)
ADSA joined 50 groups in a letter to House and Senate Appropriations Committee leaders requesting their support for $10 million in appropriations for the Agricultural Genome to Phenome Initiative. Established in the 2018 Farm Bill, AG2PI focuses on collaborative science engagement and building a community of researchers across both crops and animals that will lay the foundation for expanding our knowledge of genomes and phenomes (traits) of crops and livestock that are vital to the U.S. agriculture industry. (April 20, 2021)
