Feb 21, “Beloved Community in Practice,” Rev. Sam Trumbore

The ideals of community make it sound delightful. Yet individuals imperfectly fit themselves into communities and can be in tension with it. How do we resolve the never-ending conflicts between individual interests and the good of the community?

Music provided by our Albany UU Virtual Choir, Elena Karpoff, Randy Rosette

Feb 28, “The Price of Community,” Rev. Sam Trumbore
Every community makes claims upon its members. It may ask for shared values and commitments. It may ask for shared behavioral norms. All communities ask for loyalty in some form. And all of them depend on mutual financial support.

Music provided by our Albany UU Virtual Choir, Elena Karpoff, Chris Jensen, Randy Rosette, Parody by Bob Franklin

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENTS!

Call for Stewardship Volunteers
Lifting Hearts, Broadening Minds, Doing Justice…Together

It’s that time again! We’re about to start our Stewardship Campaign, Lifting Hearts, Broadening Minds, Doing Justice…Together, and we’ll need some volunteers to help make it happen. Each year during Sunday services in the campaign, we feature the testimonials of members and friends who share with us why they are committed to supporting Albany UU with a financial pledge. We need four people to give these three to five minute testimonials. And starting in April, we’ll need volunteers to make follow-up calls to members and friends to encourage them to complete their pledges. You can indicate your interest using this form. Thank you for considering this important contribution to the Stewardship Campaign! Every little bit helps!

Sending HUUGS, (Huge UU Greetings) to our Fledgling Young Adults
Each year the Religious Education Council asks the congregation for donations to send packages of goodies and cards with our good wishes to our recently bridged youth (those who have moved on from our high school group). We know that they dearly appreciate these packages!

This year, because of COVID, the REC is purchasing, packing up and mailing packages of goodies. Even young adults living at home this year need a little love from us!

We’re asking congregants to mail cards, letters, and valentines directly to these fledgling young adults. Here is a google doc with their postal addresses. You may know these young adults and tell them that you’re thinking of them; and if you don’t know them, you could send a note and simply sign it with your name and say that you’re from Albany UU.

Our commUUnity rocks!

UU Family/Household Circle Training
Friday, Feb 12, 8-9 pm and Saturday, Feb 13, 10-11am
Openings available!
Leah Purcell has a tool she can share with families, couples, or any household to strengthen connections and communication at home. It’s a way to help practice your values where it counts most – at home, with the people you spend so much time with! The whole family or household does not need to come to learn – just two members is enough for to learn and bring the practice home. This two-part workshop is for adults, youth, and children. Parents/caretakers can put young ones to bed on Friday before attending; Saturday session will have some activities to include little ones - hopefully, they can also play nearby for this hour.
Fill out this form by today, Thursday, Feb. 11, to let Leah know that you are interested. If you have questions, contact Leah directly at dre@albanyuu.org

Warmth for those in need
The Interfaith Shelter for the homeless could still use our blankets, sleeping bags, jackets, and other warming items. Because the church is not a suitable place to gather these at this time, Carol Butt is looking for Albany UU volunteers in different areas around the capital district to be collection points for these items. Please e-mail Carol at catzen1944@gmail.com or call or text (518) 275-7497 if you'd like to help.

SOCIAL ACTION
Social Responsibilities Council Recommends

Food Drive Contribution Opportunity - Grassroot Givers
Our near neighbors, Grassroot Givers, has asked if Albany UUs would be interested in contributing again to their food drive. They are looking for partners to stock their ONEWORLD Relief micro food pantry in front of their facility at 522 Washington Avenue. During the Pandemic, there has been a huge demand for food placed there and they’re having trouble keeping it stocked. They are looking for non-perishable food items (canned goods, pasta, etc.) that can be placed in the micro-pantry in front of the facility. You could make an appointment to leave bags of non-perishables on the cart outside of their door, or the food can be put directly into the pantry when dropped off.

The Albany UU Social Responsibilities Council (SRC) and Inclusivity Team recommend a Black Lives Matter vigil in Troy:
When: Saturdays,10:30-11:00 am
Where: Troy, the sidewalk at the former Price Chopper: 865 2nd Avenue, 12182
  • physical distance, masks
  • signs only, no chanting (except for meditative religious practice)
  • the vigil will automatically be canceled if the temperature is 20 or below OR if the wind chill is below 10 degrees Fahrenheit
