Student Profile | Sriya Srinivasan

Meet Sriya Srinivasan, the current Student Trustee of Solano Community College and the Founder/President of SCC’s Reproductive Health Club (RHC). Sriya is a dual-enrolled sophomore in high school participating in the Early College High School Program, a partnership between Rodriguez High School and Solano Community College.

Sriya began her college career in 2020 after finding she had extra time on her hands. She took a political science class and suddenly knew what she wanted to do.

“I remember the night that I watched Vice President Kamala Harris’s Acceptance Speech when election results came out. Tucked into my bed sheets, wiggling with excitement. Seeing another South Tamil Indian like myself in such a high position of power inspired me to strive for the “impossible”. That was when I knew I wanted to become a politician,” she said.

Sriya also has an interest in reproductive health and began to work for AMAZE. “AMAZE works towards providing young adolescents around the globe with medically accurate, age-appropriate, affirming, and honest sex education,” she said. “As an ambassador, it was my job to ensure the content being published was relevant to the youth community. From then on, my passion for the reproductive health space continued to grow.”

She also started the Reproductive Health Club at SCC where they are focusing on Emergency Contraceptive Access and Menstrual Education Equity.

Outside of classes she enjoys cross country and badminton where she plays for Rodriguez High School.

Sriya joined ASSC, the Associated Students of Solano College, and eventually ran for student trustee because she wanted to be a voice for students.

“I knew that I would not only get to represent my fellow campus mates but also learn lifelong skills that I’ll hold onto for the rest of my life,” she said.

Her goal as student trustee is to prioritize the health and wellness of all Solano students.

“With passions within public health, such as Reproductive Justice and Nutrition Equity, it’s my role as Student Trustee to ensure that students have access to resources that can achieve these attainable outcomes,” Sriya said.

In the future, Sriya said her goal of being a politician and advocate is at the forefront. “I’d love to remain within the advocacy world of politics, specifically within public health,” she said. “This country needs more advocates to stand up for meaningful change.”

And how does she feel about SCC overall? “We care about our students, we care what they think, and we care about how others perceive our campus. I love how I can walk on campus and feel safe by the safety force we have on campus always patrolling and saying hi to us every day. I love how I can walk into a classroom and not feel ridiculed by those around me and instead learn with enjoyment. I love how I can meet such a diverse demographic of amazing students who are some of the most dedicated people I’ve ever met,” she said. “I cannot wait to continue my time here at Solano for at least another three years! If you see me on campus don’t hesitate to say hi!”

Dia de Muertos Celebrations

Solano’s Dia de Muertos celebrations are well underway here at Solano!

Solano College will have open their ofrendas to the public starting October 16 and in advance of that would like to start collecting names and photographs of loved ones that our community would like included. Please Join us in celebrating and remembering those who have passed.

The Day of the Dead is a holiday traditionally celebrated on November 1 and 2 across Latino communities. Mexico and other Hispanic communities celebrate these days with a variety of traditions. A very common tradition is an Ofrenda or Offering. Ofrendas are not for worshiping the deceased, but rather for remembrance and celebration of a life lived.

Each Ofrenda is unique because the objects on it typically represent the things those who’re remembered on it used to enjoy.

We’re asking the SCC Community for help in identifying SCC students, faculty, and staff as well as Solano friends, family and loved ones that have passed away. It is our goal to include them in the Ofrenda as a tribute to their dedication to the college and the Solano community. Please fill out this Microsoft form by October 26, 2022 to include someone in the Ofrenda. The following QR code will also take you to the form if you’re scanning on your mobile device.

We also have a lot of programming across the solano campuses in Vallejo, Vacaville and Fairfiled for students and their families to partake in. Remember we are a community made up of our students, staff, faculty, AND their supporters!

Demystifying the Banner SaaS Project: Banner SaaS Vision

The previous Banner ERP 101 article was an overview of Banner ERP. Now, let’s review what Banner SaaS is and the vision behind its adoption.

SaaS is short for Software-as-a-Service and is a cloud-based software delivery approach where software is delivered over the Internet vs. hosted locally in our college’s data center. After SaaS adoption, the Banner ERP footprint of processes will be delivered by Ellucian, not by our Campus Technology Services Department. We are doing this because we envision a future where Banner SaaS will serve as a digital backbone enabling seamless academic and business operations and giving our students, faculty and staff the tools and insights they need to thrive in our ever-changing world.

With Banner SaaS, we aim to:

1. Eliminate the need for our college to invest in and maintain costly on-premises servers and hardware.

2. Foster continuous improvement: Ellucian will deploy regular updates to the Banner SaaS system in terms of features, security and compliance, thus ensuring that our college will stay up to date with the latest technology trends and regulations.

3. Enforce security and compliance: Ellucian-provided resources will achieve a better posture for safeguarding sensitive student and financial data in compliance with regulatory requirements.

4. Streamline software integrations: Business and educational cloud software purchases and state initiatives continue to force our Technology Services Department into a reactive role as these cloud purchases require us to figure out how to integrate the products into the overall Banner ERP on-premises footprint—with limited resources. Moving to a SaaS model will streamline

many integrations through enhanced capabilities provided by Ellucian.

5. Sustainability: Moving our Banner ERP footprint to the SaaS model will contribute to operational sustainability in terms of data redundancy and disaster recovery as we position our college as a leader in world-class educational excellence.

Successful Inaugural Recruiting Saturday Showcases Solano College Athletics

On Saturday, September 30, Solano College hosted its very first Fall Recruiting Saturday. The event, which saw an impressive turnout, drew approximately 40 prospective student athletes from a diverse array of sports, along with their parents. This Outreach event was designed to provide valuable insights into academic and financial aid opportunities, and it included a great campus tour led by Head Volleyball Coach Darla Williams (see picture below).

Erik Visser, Solano College Athletics Director, shared his enthusiasm for the event and expressed the institution's commitment to ongoing excellence:

"We have determined that moving our Outreach to an earlier date is crucial in educating our community about the merits of attending Solano College while participating in our Athletics Program. This initiative is a vital component of our long-term strategic plan, ensuring that Solano College Athletics continues to lead the way in Community College Athletics."

Beta Mu Gamma Wins $1K Grant

SCC’s Beta Mu Gamma chapter of PTK has been awarded a $1,000 grant from Phi Theta Kappa and the Mellon Foundation to support its 2023 Honors in Action project on the importance of play and a students’ sense of belonging.

Solano’s PTK students developed their research question: “Does connecting students to each other through play in the classroom help build community, thus, leading to increased student success?” They are reviewing current research around student engagement and success. PTK students plan to host a campus-wide carnival-style playday tentatively scheduled for November 30, 2023, to promote play, social engagement, and students’ sense of belonging at Solano.

Then, at January convention, PTK students will present a student-faculty forum to highlight the importance of engagement in the classroom. PTK hopes the campus will join in the fun!

SCC Foundation News

The SCC Educational Foundation was busy this month with three outreach and fundraising events. The Tee Off for Education Golf Tournament was held on Sept. 8th at Rancho Solano. 75 golfers turned out to support the college and foundation.

Two weeks later the Foundation hosted a Chamber of Commerce

Business mixer at the SCC Vallejo Auto Tech Center on Sept. 21st . The highlights were a performance by the Folklorico Dancers and a performance by a Duet hosted by the Vallejo Symphony.

On Sept. 23rd, the Foundation supported the Fairfield-Suisun Rotary Club fundraising concert at the CCC Performing Arts Center. The concert featured Super Diamond, a Neil Diamond tribute band. All three events helped raise the profile of SCC in the local community, as many came out to see college facilities for the first time, and/or participated in fundraising efforts to support scholarships and local youth programs. Thanks to everyone that supported these events.

Next up for the Educational Foundation and SCC Scholarship Foundation is the 51st Annual Scholarship Awards Ceremony on October 17 at 7:00 p.m. in the cafeteria. At this presentation, nearly $90,000 in scholarships will be awarded to SCC students. Please come out to support this important occasion.

Tutoring Center has Graphic Novels Display

If you're looking for some inspiration or simply want to see some impressive artwork, be sure to stop by the tutoring center to check out these amazing graphic novels. Each novel tells a unique story of students who faced academic struggles and found success through the tutoring center.

The stories are relatable and inspiring, showcasing the importance of seeking help when needed and the benefits of utilizing the tutoring center's resources. The students who created the novels put a lot of effort and creativity into their work, and it shows in the final product.

The display of graphic novels is a testament to the hard work and dedication of both the students who created them and the tutors who helped them along the way.
