TALKING JEWISH SENIOR LIFE WITH JOYCE, ADA, AND ANNA

JSL residents share their unique perspectives on the vibrant and fulfilling life within this thriving community. Check the JSL YouTube page for more.

FRIENDS

With all these wonderful residents, staff and volunteers, there are so many ways we have fun at JSL. Director Beth Robinson says, “One of my favorites is playing word games with residents here at Fleischman, where my office is located. I’m hoping to get a chance to join their beach ball activity one day soon. Here are some upcoming activities at JSL:

Fall Fashion Fun

Tuesday, August 29 at Fleischman and Hechtman, 1:00pm.

Wednesday, August 30 at Meer, at 1:00pm.

Fabulous resident models will be showing off some of the boutique’s fall fashions. Although it may be blistering outside, inside the air conditioning will be perfect for jackets and sweaters in all the season’s great colors. Come for cookies, coffee, and a first crack at shopping the boutique! Open to the public.

Movies at the Maple

The Maple Theater has invited us to have a special JSL screening of Golda on Wednesday, September 6 at 2:00pm. Tickets will be available at the door. They are $8 and include popcorn. Golda, which features Helen Mirren as Golda Meir and Liev Schreiber as Henry Kissinger focuses on the Yom Kippur war. Outnumbered, outgunned, surrounded, isolated, and frustrated by the infighting of her cabinet, Meir races against time to save millions of lives on both sides of the conflict. We hope you’ll join us!

Ritual Committee

While maybe more lovely than fun, we are putting a crew together to enhance the ritual life at JSL. We’re looking for volunteers who would like to participate in:

  • Kabbalat Shabbat
  • Havdallah
  • Passover Seders
  • Megillah readings on Purim
  • Shofar blowing
  • Sukkot – Sukkah decorating / prayers

For information on the boutiques, fashion shows, movie event, volunteering, or anything else FRIENDS related, please feel free to contact me any time: 248-592-5062 or brobinson@jslmi.org.

Looking forward to seeing you at JSL! –Beth Robinson

JSL JULY HAPPENINGS

FAMILY

(SUNDAY) FUN DAY

Roughly 300 people dined, danced, and socialized at JSL's Family Fun Day, Sunday, July 16, on the Oak Park campus. "Family Fun day is a special opportunity to bring the residents, staff and their families together for a great time," said Coville Assisted Living Administrator Mona Hansen-Hill. “Our residents enjoy seeing their loved ones  spend time with the staff who takes care of them.”

A GOLDEN

100th BIRTHDAY

Major milestone Mazel Tov to Coville Apartments resident Ruth (Myriam) Goldstein, who celebrated  100 years. Joined by her daughter, Jan Wanetick, along with family and friends - including her aids who came on their days off - Ruth was ecstatic to celebrate this milestone. "She knows everybody and loves it here," Jan said. "She was so happy."

Born in Detroit, Ruth attended Western High School. Her parents owned two grocery stores in Detroit, and she eventually worked for her older brothers, both accountants,  then went on to work for Jewish Federation downtown. She worked part-time into her 70s. Ruth volunteered throughout her years for Jewish Vocational Service and in her grandkids’ elementary schools, and with some local teachers, for eight years, when she lived at Hechtman Apartments. Ruth is excellent at word games, including Jumble, crossword puzzles and Scrabble. She participates in  "Maintain Your Brain" activities at Prentis, exercise classes at Coville, plays Canasta and Mahjong, and gets her hair done at the beauty shop every Tuesday. She still pays her own bills and makes a weekly contribution to Rabbi Polter's tzedakah fund. Ruth, we are so glad you are living your best life at Coville! L'Chaim to 120!

FRAUD PREVENTION WITH WBPD

Meer Residents packed the room for a Fraud Prevention discussion,  presented by the West Bloomfield Police Department. Officer James Pettinato spoke on major tips to avoid when opening email,  answering the phone, opening the mail, opening websites, customer support, and bank scams, along with tips on password usage and protection. "This presentation was designed and aimed to equip our senior citizens with the knowledge of what to look out for, enhancing their protection against fraud," said Officer Pettinato. "Of course, they can always reach out to us, especially to report fraudulent activity. We want them to remember these important safety tips."

SHABBAT SHALOM

Rabbi Dovid S. Polter, Community Chaplain

Travel Through the Eyes of Kabbalah

When attending Kabbalah classes, we are first introduced to G‑d by learning the term "infinity." Infinity depicts the unlimited nature of G‑d. We discover the six "millennia " of the world's creation, divided into three sets. Further, we come to realize the "focus " required to grow in Jewish education. We take on the "quest " to immerse ourselves in the wisdom of Torah as we "venture " to succeed.

Think about the universal technique to keep children occupied during driving trips. We ask them to spot various state license plates and read bumper stickers for hidden messages. We read the names of new cars for intriguing, uplifting, entertaining and educational inspiration, thanks to the automakers, who in recent years – (perhaps in preparation for the coming of the Moshiach) – have developed a new plan to boost sales by naming models with titles from the sacred wisdom of the Kabbalah (Jewish mysticism.)

The new car model names, Infiniti, Millennia, Focus, Quest, and Venture are buzz words, that evoke spiritual ideation and feeling. We may ask, "Why does it make sense to label machinery designed from steel with names that defy the mundane?

"Infinity,” for example, has always been a description of the One and only G‑d. If we ask automakers what gives them the right to use these sacred names, they might say: Anything to make a sale! But when we asked a Chasidic Jew the same question, he might reply: It's time to realize G‑d's essence is in everything, even the most mundane object, like an automobile.

L’Chaim!

More than half of the residents who live in our JSL communities are considered low income or indigent. Your philanthropic support is essential to maintaining programs and services to help these older adults age with dignity and with a better quality of life. In addition, your gifts could significantly support the shortfall in the cost of pharmacy bills which are so vital to the residents’ wellness. We are so grateful for your generous gifts to Jewish Senior Life.
