CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY LONG BEACH
COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING
Dean's Message
Welcome to Spring 2022, and welcome back to campus! This newsletter shines a light on women in engineering. We are immensely proud of Dr. Perla Ayala in the Biomedical Engineering Department for her prestigious and recently announced NSF CAREER award. The alumni spotlight features Georgia Griffiths, who is a trailblazer in her own right. Finally, we are busy planning the BEACH Women in Engineering Conference, which is shaping up to be a star-studded event! In honor of Black History Month, we are working on initiatives to aggressively recruit more of our underrepresented peers to the field. We have eight faculty searches in progress this semester, in addition to a Faculty of Practice and numerous staff searches.

I appreciate everyone’s flexibility as we continue to navigate uncertain times. While the road ahead may still contain some bumps, know that we will face them together as a college. GO BEACH!

BME Department's Perla Ayala Receives NSF CAREER Award
Dr. Perla Ayala has been interested in using tissue engineering to help cardiac patients since graduate school. Receiving a prestigious NSF CAREER Award will enable her to continue her research, incorporating training to help underrepresented students.
Software CEO to Keynote BEACH Women in Engineering Conference
CSULB alumna Georgia Griffiths had a strong desire to work at a company where she could advance. Three decades later, G2 Software Systems, the company she founded, is still thriving. Griffiths will be the keynote speaker at the BEACH Women in Engineering Conference this April.

In Remembrance: #LiveLikeHunter
Just weeks after he disappeared off the Northern California Coast while planning a family treasure hunt, CSULB Aerospace Engineering junior Hunter Lewis was scheduled to start work with the PoSSUM Scientist Astronaut Program, where participants conduct research that forms the foundation for tomorrow’s space missions.
Becoming an astronaut was one of Lewis’s dreams. But it wasn’t the only one.
